Description

The Team 
At the Cowichan Lake Research Station (CLRS), you’ll join a welcoming and experienced team in the Forest Genetics Section, dedicated to tree improvement and genetic conservation. Collaborating closely with other researchers and technical staff, you'll contribute to vital breeding and research plans for various tree species, supporting the goals of the Ministry and Forest Genetics Council. Your contributions will be integral to the success of high-value tree breeding programs, helping to sustain the beauty and vitality of British Columbia’s forests.

The Role 
In this key role, you’ll shape the future of forest genetics projects by defining project scope, crafting research proposals, managing budgets, and supervising dedicated research assistants and technicians. You'll be a go-to expert, offering valuable advice on scientific studies and best practices, supporting ministry managers and the broader resource management community. Joining our team means contributing to the world-class forest genetics research that makes British Columbia a leader in reforestation and forest conservation.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience

  • Doctorate in Forest or Plant Genetics with one or more years research experience in tree improvement, breeding, population or quantitative genetics; OR,
  • Master's degree plus three or more years research experience in tree improvement, breeding, population or quantitative genetics. 
  • Registered (or immediately eligible for registration) as a Professional Forester with Forest Professionals BC (FPBC); OR, a Professional Agrologist with the British Columbia Institute of Agrologists (BCIA). Note: immediately eligible for registration is defined as being able to transfer a current membership from an applicable jurisdiction to the relevant BC association within six (6) months of employment. Confirmation of registration/eligibility is required before an offer of employment can be made.
  • Demonstrated experience planning and implementing research projects related to genetic improvement in traits of interest and/or generate information that leads to forest tree genetic resource management decisions.
  • Demonstrated experience in scientific research, publishing, participation and presentations in scientific meetings.
