The Team
The Negotiations and Regional Operations Division (NROD) is a team of committed professionals who work passionately with Indigenous peoples, Federal partners, and other parties towards reconciliation and creating impactful solutions through collaboration and respect. The Coast Area Negotiations and Regional Operations Division team negotiates and implements treaties and other agreements with First Nations whose territories include the Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley, Sea-to-Sky Corridor, Sunshine Coast, Vancouver Island, Central Coast and Haida Gwaii. 

The Role
As an Assistant Negotiator, you'll be at the heart of shaping crucial agreements, driving strategy, and fostering collaboration among diverse parties. This includes leading key negotiation aspects and working closely with First Nations, Canada, and other rightsholders to understand their interests and expectations. You will assist in creating and refining negotiation proposals, participating in working groups, and preparing essential documentation for executive and government reviews, all while crafting agreements that set new standards for innovation and collaboration.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline; and three (3) years related experience, OR
  • A technical diploma in a relevant discipline; and five (5) years related experience.

*Related experience must include all of the following:

  • Experience participating in and leading components of interest-based negotiations.
  • Experience working in an Indigenous relations context on issues related to land transfers, land use, resource management, social or economic development issues. 
  • Experience managing multiple concurrent projects and assignments.

Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:

  • Applicants who self-identify as Indigenous.
  • Experience working with Indigenous organizations and/or communities.

Provisos/Willingness Statements:

  • Willingness and ability to travel. Frequent travel is a requirement of this position. Incumbents must be willing and able to travel throughout the province up to 70% of the time for extended periods with little notice.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 BC driver’s license and be legally able to rent a vehicle in British Columbia.

About this Position:
This is a temporary opportunity until October 31st, 2025. A permanent appointment may result from this temporary appointment.
This position can be based in any of the following Indigenous Relations And Reconciliation offices: Surrey, Nanaimo, Victoria.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.
A Criminal Record Check (CRC) will be required.
