The Team
The BC Wildfire Service’s Kootenay Lake Fire Zone is an Initial Attack Base. It is a close-knit crew of 23 where high morale and camaraderie drive impactful work. The Wildfire Assistant position is a multi-functional compliment to the Senior Officer staff with a ‘boots on the ground’ connection to the zone’s IA crews and wildfire response objectives.
The Role
As a Wildfire Assistant, your focus is to provide an effective and efficient response to wildfires through preparation, planning, and logistics management. You'll play a vital part in keeping both citizens and responders safe, by balancing priorities and adapting to the fast-paced needs of the team. While much of the work is desk-based, there is variety in the tasks, and you’ll have opportunities for continued development and learning. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain insight into behind-the-scenes operations helping you develop a broader understanding of wildfire response and work toward becoming the Zones Chainsaw Lead.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Technical diploma in a field related to forestry or resource management, plus 2 seasons recent related experience*: OR
- Grade 12 plus 4 seasons in related experience*; OR
- An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered; AND
- Minimum 2 seasons of supervisory experience.
- Valid class 5 driver licence.
*Related experience is defined as natural resource management operations or other disciplines related to natural resource management.
Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
- Certified as Incident Commander 4 or higher
- Qualified Faller Trainer certification

- To take in-house training and certification as required.
- To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required.
- To work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan.
- To travel and overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required.
- To participate in Incident Command System positions as assigned.
- To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat and mountainous terrain in remote and isolated conditions.
- To obtain and maintain certification and training for position to meet operational requirements.

About this Position:
This is a temporary opportunity (Auxiliary) until November 1, 2025 with possibility of recall on a yearly basis.
This position has full time on-site requirements.
