The Ministry of Energy and Climate Solutions is responsible for British Columbia’s energy resources, including electricity, alternative energy, hydrogen, oil, and natural gas sectors and related infrastructure. These sectors are made up of diverse interests that use and develop energy, low carbon fuels and electricity generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure and that produce natural gas.

The ministry’s actions support access to low-carbon energy that is affordable, while ensuring people in British Columbia receive a fair return on B.C.’s natural resources by administering subsurface rights and collecting royalties. The ministry also mitigates and manages the risks and consequences from climate change, including developing plans to meet greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets and responding to the impacts of climate change.

The Electricity and Utility Regulation Division is responsible for B.C.’s regulated utilities and low-carbon energy sectors. These sectors develop electricity generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure, clean or renewable energy sources, including renewable natural gas, hydro, geothermal, solar, ocean, and wind.

The Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM) for the Electricity and Utility Regulation Division (EURD) provides leadership in the development and implementation of both the Service Plan Objectives for the EURD and the division’s Business Plan and ensures the strategies are effectively executed. The ADM is responsible for facilitating active consultation on specific electricity and alternative energy strategies, initiatives, and plans with key internal contacts, as well as for facilitating strategic consultation external contacts including senior industry representatives, investment partners, other jurisdictional stakeholders, and business and community representatives.

The ideal candidate for this role will have post-secondary education in a related discipline (or equivalent) and have significant experience at an executive or senior management level within a related sector. They will have led the development and implementation of strategies with substantial financial, business and economic impacts. They will also bring with them several years of experience in the electricity, alternative energy, utility, and/or natural resource sectors, with in-depth knowledge of economic and business dynamics and established relationships with industry and inter-governmental representatives at all levels.

The successful candidate will be an exceptional communicator and is known for their ability to build collaborative relationships with teams and across business lines inside and outside government. Grounded in their commitment to reconciliation with Indigenous people and guided by their in depth understanding of government processes, this leader is able to leverage their experience and relationships to serve the province with clarity of purpose and deep personal integrity.
