The Team:
The Water Management Branch plays an important role in contributing to vital provincial programs that protect public safety and support responsible water use across BC. Through programs that reduce flood risks, regulate dam operations, and ensure reliable access to water utilities, this team helps safeguard homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods. Our work supports fair and sustainable management of provincial water resources, ensuring they remain safe, reliable, and sustainable for communities across the province.

The Role:
Each day as a Senior Dam Safety Officer brings a blend of technical leadership, strategic influence, and collaboration across sectors. The morning might start with reviewing engineering reports or risk assessments for hydroelectric dams, followed by a briefing with ministry executives on emerging safety concerns. Afternoons could involve leading a technical audit or coordinating emergency preparedness with regional teams, especially during flood season. Engagement is also key -- whether it’s briefing First Nations or presenting findings to national peers, your role supports the safety and sustainability of BC’s vital water infrastructure.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements:

• Master’s Degree in a technical or professional field related to water resource management with preferred specialization in dam safety, construction, operations, hazards management, or other related field and at least two (2) years of related experience; OR,
• Bachelor’s Degree in a technical or professional field related to water resource management with preferred specialization in dam safety, construction, operations, hazards management, or other related field and at least three (3) years of related experience; OR,
• Diploma in a natural resources field and at least four (4) years of related experience; OR,
• Certificate or coursework in a natural resources field and at least five (5) years of related experience; OR,
• An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be considered.
• Must possess and maintain a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence and have the ability to maintain and operate a 4-wheel drive in all types of driving conditions both on and off road.

Related experience includes the following:

• Experience providing professional expertise and oversight in areas of:
  • Geotechnical and seismic hazards, specifically focused on dam safety and water retention infrastructure; and/or,
  • Hydraulic and hydrological resource management, specifically focused on dam safety and water retention infrastructure.
• Experience providing scientific/technical expertise, advice and recommendations to executive and senior management.
• Experience preparing and/or coordinating scientific/technical reports and leading research strategies and projects associated with dam safety and hazard management.

Provisos:

• Must complete in-house Dam Safety Program training to gain the Dam Safety Officer designation and upgrade that training as required to retain the designation.
• Required to remain current with advances in dam safety practice through active membership in the Canadian Dam Association (CDA) and its technical committees.
• Availability 24/7 to respond to emergencies to perform a variety of duties within the scope of the position’s regular responsibilities.
• Required to travel throughout the province and conduct field work which may include travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight or extended stay in rough camp conditions and outdoor work in all weather conditions. This requirement is estimated to be approximately three (3) weeks per year.
• May be required, on occasional evenings and weekends, to represent the Ministry at public meetings and events.

There is currently one (1) permanent, full time position available.
This position can be based in a Natural Resource Sector office. The locations listed above are to assist applicants in searching for this opportunity and are not a complete list of locations.
Depending on the successful candidate’s location, a bi-weekly isolation allowance may apply.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to five (5) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
