Description
The Team
The BCWS HQ Communications team is responsible for provincial external communications and engagement in all four pillars of emergency management, as well as internal communications within the BC Wildfire Service. The HQ Communication team directly supports communication teams within the six regional fire centres, as well as all program areas within the BC Wildfire Service.
The Role
This position is responsible for preparing and disseminating information to the public, media, stakeholders and staff.You will work with diverse program areas within the BC Wildfire Service to promote public awareness and education on wildfire prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. The position acts within the Incident Command structure during wildfire response as a Fire Information Officer.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Technical diploma in a field related to communications, public relations, journalism or equivalent knowledge; or
- Grade 12 and an equivalent combination of education, training and 2 years related experience in communications
- Valid Class 5 driver licence or equivalent (Class 7)
Provisos /Willingness statement(s)
- To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments and corporate structures.
- To keep current on emerging issues.
- To take in-house training and certification as required.
- To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required.
- To work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan.
- To travel and overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required.
- To participate in ICS positions as assigned.
- To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat and mountainous terrain in remote and isolated conditions.

About this Position:
Two positions are available.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
Flexible work options may not be available during emergency operations response periods.
An eligibility list may be established to fill both current and/or future permanent vacancies.
A Criminal Record Check (CRC) will be required.
