The Team
The Northern Youth Probation team is an experienced and diverse group of professionals dedicated to supporting young people involved in the justice system while ensuring community safety. With 5 Youth Probation Officers, a Team Lead, they work closely with Child Protection, Youth Services and judicial professionals to create effective interventions that reduce reoffending. The team prioritizes building trust with youth and families by overcoming cultural and language barriers, ensuring services are accessible and responsive to the needs of the community.

The Role
As a Youth Probation Officer, you will play a vital role in ensuring community safety by enforcing legal orders while providing compassionate support to youth in conflict with the law who may lack strong supports or community connections. A key part of the role involves building meaningful relationships with youth and their families, collaborating with service providers, other professionals and Indigenous Nations and providing case management and supervision in accordance with court orders or Extra-judicial agreements. You will also be writing reports for the court and developing interventions that promote rehabilitation. This deeply rewarding position provides the opportunity to make a lasting impact—helping youth realize their potential and contributing to safer, stronger communities. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, OR Bachelor’s Degree in a Human Services field or equivalent.
    • NOTE: If your degree was obtained outside of Canada, you need to confirm it has been assessed for equivalency through the International Credential Evaluation Services (ICES). You must provide a basic report by the closing date of this posting to be considered.

*Human Services field includes: Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Anthropology, Social Work, Early Childhood Education, Indigenous Studies, Education, Theology or Nursing.

Preference may be given to applicants with the following:

  • Six (6) months or more job specific experience (Experience gained working as either as an Adult Probation Officer or a Fully Delegated Youth Probation Officer in a Canadian Jurisdiction).
  • Recent experience (within 5 years) in justice, educational or social service setting that involves supervision, counselling or conflict resolution.
  • Applicants who self-identify as First Nations, Métis or Inuit with the required combination of education and experience.

  • Applicants may be considered who have not yet graduated but have completed all required courses and are able to provide a letter from their educational institution confirming completion of degree requirements.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License with no restriction or equivalent (i.e. from another Canadian Province).

About this Position:
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 1 day at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO APPLICANTS

This location is currently eligible for a retention incentive which is available to all regular permanent Social Program Officers residing in Hard to Recruit (HTR) designated communities across the province. In addition to the re-imbursement of relocation costs (where applicable), the incentive program provides the following:

  • Up to a maximum of $6,000 annual lump sum payment to regular permanent full-time Social Program Officers in the SPO R18 to SPO R30 classifications* OR
  • Up to a maximum of $3,000 annual lump sum payment to regular permanent full-time Social Program Officers placed in the SPO Growth Series (SPO Growth to SPO R24 classifications)**

*Full payment of the incentive is based on regular eligible classifications (SPO R18 to SPO R30) working in an approved location for the full fiscal year (April 1 to March 31). A pro-rated incentive payment may be provided to candidates who work a partial year and/or part-time hours.
