Description

The Team

As a Justice of the Peace/ Registry Technician you will be working closely with the Abbotsford Law Courts team in the Criminal and Civil Registries. There are three Justices of the Peace/Registry Technicians, that are a part of an established group which is made up of Deputy District Registrars, Combo Clerks, and Registry Clerks. This team provides specialized counter services, support for court proceedings, and functions in a dynamic and changing justice environment.

The Role
You will carry out important judicial responsibilities as a Justice of the Peace, provide Deputy District Registrar services in Supreme Court, and perform delegated judicial duties for Small Claims Court. Your work helps ensure that court users receive accurate information, timely support, and fair access to justice. This is a unique opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the justice system while growing your skills, using independent judgment, and adapting to new technologies and processes. The position is well‑suited for someone who is flexible, detail‑focused, and able to interpret statutes, legislation, and policies with care and inclusivity.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Secondary school graduation or equivalent (GED)
  • 2 years working in the justice system, with a comprehensive understanding of the justice system and court processes
  • Must have experience in keyboarding, data entry, word processing, standard computer applications and software programs (ex: Windows, MS Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Must have or be eligible to obtain Certification as a Deputy District Registrar for Supreme Court within one year
  • Must have or be eligible to obtain a commission as a Justice of the Peace for British Columbia within 6 months

Preference may be given to candidates with:

  • 1 year working in Court Administration
  • Experience as a Justice of the Peace
  • Experience in JUSTIN and/or CEIS
  • Experience with Civil and Criminal Programs
  • Experience as a Deputy District Registrar for Supreme Court
  • Experience in interpreting and applying legislation, rules, policies and/or procedures


Provisos /Willingness statement(s)

  • Must pass Enhanced Security Screening checks
  • Attendance and completion of relevant training is required
  • May be required to work flexible hours, including varied shifts and overtime on short notice
  • May be required to travel, including travel in adverse weather conditions and work in other geographical areas, including circuit court locations. Must have reliable transportation and/or be willing to travel with others
  • Able to lift heavy objects up to 30 lbs
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

This is a temporary opportunity until July 31, 2027. This position may be extended or become permanent.
This position has full time on-site requirements.
