The Team
The Cariboo Fire Centre Communications team is a small group made up of the Community Engagement Specialist, Communications Specialist and Communications Assistant. We work closely with every program area and all four zones in the Cariboo Fire Centre to support internal and external communications. Our team is passionate about supporting our community with accurate and engaging information on wildfire preparedness, prevention and response information.
The Role
Bring your attention to detail and talent for storytelling and strategic communications to this fast-paced career. This position is responsible for developing and delivering communications program for the Fire Centre including internal and external communications materials. You will work in a dynamic operational environment and collaborate with regional and provincial resources to make a meaningful difference in improving and supporting wildfire response, preparedness and recovery messaging.
The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) is the Province of BC’s primary emergency response organization. It operates year-round to deliver its mandate for wildfire management and response to natural hazard emergencies. The BCWS operates provincially, delivering services through six fire centres, thirty-three zones and two provincial centres in Kamloops and Victoria.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
• Degree in a field related to communications, public relations, journalism or equivalent knowledge; OR
• Technical diploma in a field related to communications, public relations, journalism, or equivalent knowledge, plus two (2) years recent related experience*; OR
• Grade 12 plus five (5) years related experience*; OR
• An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
*Related experience must include a combination of the following:
• Content development and/or management (user experience based)
• Developing or implementing communications plans
• Preparing media materials and key messages
Preference may be given to applicants who have one or more of the following:
• Two (2) or more years supervisory experience.
• Experience in organized Emergency Response Management.
• Experience working respectfully, knowledgeably and effectively with Indigenous people and First Nations communities.
• Current BCWS certification as Information Assistant or higher within the Incident Command System.
• Experience fulfilling the role of Information Officer within the Fire Centre in the last two (2) years.
• Two (2) or more years experience working with, a combination of, the following applications:
- Adobe Suite
- Content Management System (e.g., Wordpress, CMS Lite)
- Electronic mailout software (e.g., Envoke., MailChimp)
Proviso:
• Valid Class 5 driver license
Willingness Statements:
• To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments and corporate structures.
• To keep current on emerging issues.
• To take in-house training and certification as required.
• To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required.
• To work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan.
• To travel and overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required.
• To participate in Incident Command System positions as assigned.
• To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat and mountainous terrain in remote and isolated conditions.

About this Position:
This is a permanent full time position.
This position is on site, with the possibility of remote work two days a weeks a week as per a Telework Agreement.
Flexible work options may not be available during emergency operations response periods.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
