The Team:
The Wildlife Section in the Kootenay Region is a passionate, highly skilled group committed to conserving wildlife across one of British Columbia’s most ecologically rich landscapes. With an established team of senior biologists, wildlife biologists, and seasonal support staff, this crew blends western science, Indigenous knowledge, and community values to tackle complex challenges with heart and expertise. Their work makes a real difference in strengthening wildlife populations, supporting cultural and ecological priorities, and helping communities thrive alongside the species that call the Kootenays home.
The Role:
The Senior Wildlife Biologist leads key stewardship efforts across the Kootenays, guiding population monitoring, setting management direction for game species, and supporting safe, effective delivery of regional programs. This work brings science, partnership-building, and leadership together to protect biodiversity, strengthen cultural and recreational opportunities, and reduce conflicts that affect communities. In this role you can look forward to shaping priorities, fostering a strong team, and championing innovative, collaborative approaches that support reconciliation, sustainability, and healthy wildlife populations across this remarkable landscape.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Master's degree (or higher) in biological sciences or a related field and two (2) years of related experience; or,
- Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or a related field and three (3) years of related experience.
Related Experience may include
- Experience coordinating with Indigenous Nations on projects or field settings.
- Advanced scientific experience related to wildlife population assessment, modeling and adaptive management.
- Experience conducting wildlife population assessments and setting wildlife harvest allocations.
- Experience interpreting and applying natural resource management legislation and policy.
- Experience in delivering both written and oral communications.
- Experience leading staff in project or field settings.
- Experience in public and First Nations consultation processes on ecosystem management issues.
Professional Registration and Certification Requirements
- Registered or immediately eligible for registration (within six (6) months of employment) as a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) in BC with the College of Applied Biologists (CAB).
Additional Requirements
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence or equivalent.
- Must meet safety standards of WorkSafeBC.

About this Position:
There is currently one (1) permanent, full time position available.
This position can be located in Cranbrook or Nelson.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
