Job Overview

The Senior Advisor is the ministry specialist on the mineral, placer and coal tenure regulatory regime. The position applies a comprehensive understanding of all issues related to the mineral exploration sector and mineral, placer and coal tenures and applies it with a critical lens to the issues that they are faced with to provide a solution that is consistent the legislative framework. The work is guided by ministry goals and objectives and has long-term implications for the mineral exploration and mining industries.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Applicable bachelor’s degree (Geography, Land Law, Business/Commerce, Community Planning, Land Use Planning, Civil Engineering, Renewable/Natural Resources, Natural Sciences, or related discipline) and three (3) years related experience, OR
  • Applicable diploma (Geography, Land Law, Business/Commerce, Community Planning, Land Use Planning, Civil Engineering, Renewable/Natural Resources, Natural Sciences, or related discipline) and four (5) years related experience.

Related experience must include at least three of the following in the past 10 years: 

  • Experience developing and maintaining effective and cooperative working relationships, inside and outside government.
    • Internal: Employees of the BC Public service who are impacted by your work.
    • External: Members of Indigenous communities, clients, members of the public who are impacted by your work.
  • Experience in reviewing, understanding and considering legal documentation in the line of work.
    • Legal documentation: Documents prepared in the courts, legal correspondence, case law, wills and estates and/or real estate documentation
  • Experience in interpreting and applying legislation, statutes, regulations, case law, bylaws, and policies.
  • Experience acting as a Statutory Decision Maker.
  • Experience in developing policy and guidance documents to be used by staff and/or clients.

Preferences may be given to applicants with:

  • A combined 5 years of demonstrated experience in all areas of related experience above in the past 10 years.
  • Mentored new Statutory Decision Makers.
  • Demonstrated experience interpreting and applying discretion under the Mineral Tenure Act and/or other Natural Resource Legislation (Mines Act, Forest Act, Lands Act)

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
