Description

The Team:
The Strategic Land Use – West Coast Region team is a collaborative, passionate group leading some of BC’s most innovative land use and stewardship initiatives, including the Great Bear Rainforest and the Province’s first modernized land use and water sustainability plans. We work closely with First Nations, other partners and across ministries, bringing together planners, biologists, foresters, and Indigenous relations professionals within a flexible matrix model that allows us to support one another as priorities evolve. Our team values diverse experience, strong relationships, and a supportive culture that emphasizes balance, connection, and meaningful impact on public land and water across the Coast.

The Role:
The Land and Resource Specialist works closely with a Director of Resource Initiatives and a broader team of Land and Resource Specialists to transform complex natural resource challenges into creative, practical solutions to help shape policy, advance Ministry objectives, and strengthen stewardship outcomes. In this role, you’ll support and lead dynamic, multidisciplinary projects requiring collaboration and coordination of teams across multiple agencies and guide strategic initiatives from start to finish, collaborating closely with partners—including First Nations—to navigate diverse issues and drive thoughtful resource management decisions.

Current priorities are projects that focus on natural resource stewardship in the marine environment with First Nations partners, as well as the negotiation and implementation of Land Use Plans. The work is multi-disciplinary and in close collaboration with First Nation partners and contractors. Projects may be high profile and these positions are suited to people who strongly identify with BC Public Service values of Service, Accountability and Teamwork. Strong project management skills are critical. The focus on marine initiatives may shift in future depending on emerging needs and priorities of the division.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a natural resource management related field (e.g., Forestry, Geography, Biology, Marine Biology, Planning, Geomatics or Natural Resource Management), or an equivalent combination of education/training, plus five (5) or more years of related experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing components of strategic, high-profile and/or multi-disciplinary projects in which innovative solutions were implemented to solve a unique or complex natural resource management problem.
  • Demonstrated experience in a multiple partners environment, understanding perspectives, conflicts and facilitating/developing solutions.
  • Demonstrated expertise in distilling and communicating complex natural resource information to laypersons.
  • Experience and knowledge of conflict and dispute resolution principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated experience working on initiatives that required collaboration, relationship building, negotiation and/or consultation with First Nations partners.

Related experience may include:

  • Experience in coordinating project teams.
  • Experience managing relationships with senior level partners.
  • Experience working for First Nations governments/organizations.

Preference may be given to those with one (1) or more of the following:

  • Training in project management or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating groups whose members hold varying interests, in a natural resource context.
  • Demonstrated experience working on initiatives that required collaboration, relationship building, negotiation and/or consultation with First Nations partners in the Coast Area.
  • Experience and/or training in planning, particularly marine planning for natural resources.
  • Experience in statutory decision-making or decision support.
  • Experience or Education in one or more aspects of BC West Coast marine ecosystems, governance and First Nations context.
