Job Overview
The Consumer Taxation Programs Branch (CTPB) develops and delivers administrative and compliance programs under four consumption tax acts, namely the Provincial Sales Tax Act, Tobacco Tax Act, Carbon Tax Act and Motor Fuel Tax Act.
The Fuel and Carbon Tax section (FACT) of CTPB is responsible for tax administration and revenue collection for the Motor Fuel Tax Act and the Carbon Tax Act. FACT registers businesses to sell fuel, to purchase fuels exempt of tax, to colour and to sell coloured fuel, and registers businesses under the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA). The section processes several monthly tax returns, performs desk audits, and provides taxpayer education.
As a desk auditor, you plan and conduct desk audits on taxpayers for all Fuel and Carbon Tax programs (except IFTA) to ensure completeness and accuracy of fuel tax revenues, to ensure compliance with tax statutes, and assess taxes, penalties and interest as a result of desk audit findings. You provide explanations to taxpayers regarding their rights and responsibilities and explain tax assessments and penalties issued under the Motor Fuel Tax Act and the Carbon Tax Act. The nature of work can be confrontational, and you must be able to work with frustrated, hostile or angry individuals or groups. You must be able to communicate effectively, remain focused on outcomes, and convey information that may not be welcomed by the recipient.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Degree in a related field, such as business, finance or accounting, plus a minimum of 1 year directly related work experience; OR
- Diploma in a related field, such as business, finance or accounting, plus a minimum of 2 years directly related work experience; OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Directly related work experience includes any of the following:
- Accounting/bookkeeping, including recording and organizing of financial transactions and records
- Preparing or auditing financial transactions, records and/or tax filings
- Reviewing and analyzing financial information
Preference may be given to applicants with the following experience:
- Gentax software,
- Tax program administration,
- Tax preparation and filing, and/or
- Auditing.
