Description

The Team 
The Crime Victim Assistance Program established in 2002, has 49 staff that support efforts to assist victims, their immediate family members as well as witnesses in coping with the effects of violent crimes occurring in B.C. by providing financial benefits to help offset their losses and assist with their recovery. The Claim Adjudicator group is comprised of 14 team members who work in collaboration to manage claims with 21 Claims Coordinators and 12 administrative staff who collect information and process payments.

The Role
The Claim Adjudicators work independently to review large amounts of information that may be explicit in content given the nature of violent crimes. Following the review of information, Claims Adjudicators must render written trauma informed decisions thoroughly explaining approval or denial of a claimant’s eligibility for benefits. As such, Claims Adjudicators must be detailed orientated, thrive in high volume environments with monthly minimum targets to meet, and possess highly developed communication skills to deal tactfully and objectively with claimants going through emotionally charged situations. The ideal candidate would find the work important and meaningful but would be able to incorporate self care and wellness practices to address and respond to issues of vicarious trauma.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Degree in a related field (for example: law, criminology, psychology, or social sciences); OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • At least one (1) year of experience working with victims or other vulnerable groups.
  • Demonstrated experience interpreting and applying legislation, regulations and related policies.

Preference may be given to applicants with

  • Experience writing decisions in the areas of adjudication, administrative law, tribunal processes, appeals or reconsiderations.
  • More than one year experience working with victims or other vulnerable groups.
  • One or more years experience working with justice system partners (e.g. police, Crown, courts).
  • Experience applying the principles of administrative law and procedural fairness.

About this Position:
This is a temporary opportunity until September 17, 2027. This position may be extended or become permanent.
This position can be based out of any of the location(s) listed above.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.
