Job Overview

Reporting to the Director, Strategic Policy and Intergovernmental Relations, the Legislation and Policy Analyst supports a wide variety of the responsibilities of the Strategic Policy & Intergovernmental Relations Unit. The position collaborates with partners across multiple business areas in the ministry and other natural resource ministries to pursue B.C.’s interests in inter-provincial, federal and international forums. A key responsibility includes drafting clear, concise and accurate briefing material and discussion papers for ministry executive and intergovernmental partners. The position provides in-depth secretariat support to working groups of the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers (CCFM), inter-ministry intergovernmental relations committees and various ADM-led sector-specific initiatives. The position requires superior writing, organizational and project management skills and involves briefing executives and delivering dynamic in-person and virtual presentations.
The Legislation and Policy Analyst is also responsible for researching, amending and processing legislation and orders through the required stages. 
 

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

Education:

  • Undergraduate Degree, preferably in law, public administration, public policy or a natural resource management field (e.g. forestry, environmental sciences, biology, land management) plus at least 1-year related experience; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Experience:
Related experience may include a combination of the following:

  • Demonstrated practical government or comparable public sector experience preferably associated with natural resource management, developing, or assisting in the development of, legislation (e.g. bills, regulations, orders in council, ministerial orders) and/or policy.
  • Experience gathering, verifying, synthesizing, analyzing data and information to support the development of legislation and/or policy.
  • Experience preparing complex legislation-related documents (e.g. drafting instructions, requests for legislation, section notes, Cabinet Submissions, briefing notes).
  • Experience building and maintaining working relationships and collaborating with colleagues and other stakeholders.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with experience developing public policy or legislation that may be guided or impacted by stakeholder and government objectives.
