Job Overview
The Spatial Data Specialist provides expert technical and analytical support, advice and training to the Forest Analysis and Inventory Branch (FAIB), and its internal and external clients, on spatial data management and its application in resource analysis.  This position contributes to building the capabilities of ministry staff to maximize the potential of GIS and related geospatial and information technologies through the development, implementation, evaluation and dissemination of standards, procedures and methods for collection, integration, maintenance, analysis, storage and distribution of digital corporate data.  Responsibilities include supporting staff with complex analysis projects involving spatial data, preparation of spatial datasets for forest inventory analysis, validating, reconfiguring, documenting and archiving standard inventory and analysis data, and developing systems and documentation for distribution of data.   This position supports the development of science-based policy, standards and guidelines for natural resource management, and informed strategic planning and decision-making regarding forest management activities. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree specializing in geomatics or computer science, plus three years of experience in applications of geographic information systems (GIS) and information management for natural resource analysis; OR 
  • Diploma in geomatics or GIS, plus five years of experience in applications of GIS and information management for natural resource analysis

Related Experience

  • Experience writing complex Structured Query Language (SQL) queries in an enterprise-class relational database management system such as Oracle or PostgreSQL
  • Experience with spatial data technologies and scripting for spatial data processing and analysis work 
  • Experience organizing, managing, and completing concurrent projects
  • Experience developing, summarizing and reporting analysis results

Preferences

  • Experience setting up and maintaining a local PostgreSQL database for spatial data analysis and data management
  • Experience processing and analysing (including analysing the interactions between) raster-based natural resource thematic data
  • Experience scripting in R for data processing and analysis work
  • Experience working with internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience developing web-based mapping dashboards using ArcGIS Online or R Shiny
  • Experience performing data analysis using BC forest inventories and related corporate datasets, including the Vegetation Resources Inventory (VRI), Forest Tenure Administration (FTEN), and Biogeoclimatic Ecosystem Classification (BEC) 
  • Knowledge of resource management and planning concepts, integrated resource management concepts, forest growth dynamics and data modelling

About this Position:
This is a temporary opportunity until November 19, 2026. This position may be extended or become permanent.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
