Job Overview
Investigators conduct complex, multi year investigations into regulatory non compliance, environmental incidents, serious injuries, and fatalities. Applying major case management principles, they determine root causes, assess evidence to prosecutorial standards, and work closely with Inspectors of Mines, police, coroners, Crown Counsel, and other regulatory partners. They gather and test evidence, conduct interviews, liaise with next of kin, and engage external subject matter experts as needed. Investigators prepare clear reports that support learning, regulatory improvement, and enforcement decisions. Managing multiple concurrent files, they ensure timely, high quality outcomes that meet rigorous technical and legal standards.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Degree or diploma in a field related to law enforcement, criminal justice, natural resource management, occupational health and safety, or another relevant discipline; OR 
  • An equivalent combination of education and extensive investigative experience.
  • Registered, or immediately eligible for registration (within six (6) months of employment), as a fully licensed professional with the British Columbia professional association as required by the specialty area. (i.e. Forest Professionals BC, BC Institute of Agrologists, Engineers and Geoscientists BC). Confirmation of registration/eligibility is required before an offer of employment can be made.

Experience:

  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience conducting complex regulatory, administrative, or criminal investigations, including evidence collection, analysis, interviewing, and preparing investigative documentation.
  • Experience preparing investigative reports, disclosure materials, or evidence packages for administrative hearings, tribunal processes, or criminal/court proceedings.

Preference may be given to those with one (1) or more of the following:

  • Experience applying structured case management approaches, such as major case management or equivalent investigative frameworks, to manage complex files. 
  • Experience conducting investigations involving serious injuries or fatalities.
  • Experience conducting investigations involving occupational health and safety or environmental non-compliance.
  • Experience with mining or heavy industry.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence (or equivalent) or be able to obtain one immediately.
  • Must meet the background and security screening requirements necessary to be appointed as a Special Provincial Constable.
  • Willing and able to attend incident scenes involving graphic and traumatic subject matter, including serious injuries and fatalities.
  • Willing and able to work occasional evenings and weekends, on short notice, to support incident response or investigative requirements.
  • Willing and able to travel by ground, air, fixed wing, or helicopter, including overnight travel on short notice.
  • Willing and able to work in challenging physical environments, including climbing ladders, navigating steep grades, entering underground workings, and using required personal protective equipment in conditions involving chemical vapours, dust, noise, heat, and cold.

About this Position:
There is currently one (1) permanent, full time position available.
This position can be located in any of the following offices of the Ministry of Mining and Critical Minerals: Cranbrook, Kamloops, Prince George, Smithers, Vancouver, or Victoria.
Depending on the successful candidate’s location, a bi-weekly isolation allowance may apply.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.
