Description

The Team
You will join the Mountain Resorts Branch within the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport where you work to support the sustainable development of all-seasons resorts across British Columbia. Guided by the BC Resort Strategy and the All-Season Resort Policy, the Branch works to set strategic direction, lead land use and forestry decisions, environmental assessments, and business case assessments related to new and existing resort development. The Branch works with many partners across government and leads engagement and consultation with First Nations, local governments, stakeholders and the public related to all-seasons resorts.

The Role
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Major Projects, you will provide expert advice on forestry-related matters impacting the resort sector and ski industry throughout the province. You will lead and contribute to forestry procedures and policy as they relate to the Mountain Resort Branch’s mandate. A key responsibility will be to conduct technical reviews of forestry applications, including consultation with First Nations, and complete statutory decisions on those applications. Your work will also support the Mountain Resorts Branch’s wildfire risk reduction program, and you will work collaboratively with that team on project deliverables. At times, staff will be assigned and your role will be that of supervisor, mentor and coach to the forestry team. 

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Diploma in the natural resource field or equivalent.

  • Registered as a Professional Forester (RPF) or Forest Technologist (RFT) with the Association of British Columbia Forest Professionals.

  • Seven (7) years’ experience in forestry or the natural resources field. 

  • Five (5) years’ experience directing and working with complex major projects, including direct experience with natural resource sector conflicts. 

  • Two (2) years recent experience (gained in the last 5 years) conducting, overseeing and reviewing First Nation Consultation. 

  • Valid Class 5 driver licence.
     

Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following: 

  • Experience supervising staff.

  • Experience related to tourism and/or recreation sector. 

  • More than Seven (7) years’ experience in forestry or the natural resources field.
     

Willingness Statements

  • Willingness to conduct field work which may include travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight or extended stay in rough camp conditions and outdoor work in all weather conditions.

  • Must be physically able to carry out fieldwork in difficult terrain.

  • May be required to operate field equipment (i.e., quad, snowmobile).

This position is located in Kamloops.

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home two (2) days a week subject to an approved telework agreement and operational requirements.
