This is a restricted lateral posting open to employees who hold a Band 4 base position.

Job Overview
The Manager, Fire Prevention, manages provincial fire management prevention programs to mitigate wildfires, improve suppression response, protect communities, and safeguard natural resources inventories and investments on Crown and private land. This position directs the strategic, operational planning and management for wildfire-resilient landscapes and wildfire-adapted communities; and, leads the development of programs to establish regulatory frameworks for public, private and industrial fire prevention and suppression response. The Manager, Fire Prevention works in partnership with ministry executives, other ministries/agencies of government, the forest industry, communities, the Union of BC Municipalities, First Nations and other stakeholders to delivery BCWS and Ministry goals and leads BCWS’s professional and technical expertise in fire management practice.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • University degree or technical diploma in a field related to forestry, resource management/public administration or equivalent knowledge and experience
  • A minimum of 10 years, progressively more senior experience in wildfire management or an equivalent natural resources management program
  • A minimum of 3 years experience in a senior management capacity including policy development, and facilitating diverse stakeholder interests and objectives
  • Experience leading and coaching diverse teams
  • Experience in strategic business planning and operations management

Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following: 

  • Valid Class 5 Drivers license
  • Senior Fireline Certification (ex. Type 2 or higher) or Incident Commander 3.
  • Experience in Emergency Management Response
  • Experience Wildfire Risk Reduction or Fuel Management

  • To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments and corporate structures.
  • To keep current on emerging issues.
  • To take in-house training and certification as required.
  • To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required.
  • To work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan.
  • To travel and overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required.
  • To be assigned or participate to Incident Command System positions and Incident Management Teams as required.
  • To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat and mountainous terrain in remote and isolated conditions.

This position can be based in any BC Wildfire office. The locations listed above are to assist applicants in searching for this opportunity and a complete list of locations is attached.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
