Job Overview
This position is part of the Business Innovation and Emergency Response (BIER) portfolio within GeoBC, a specialized, client-focused geospatial team delivering enterprise GIS solutions to support emergency management, climate resilience, and public safety across British Columbia. The portfolio works in close partnership with Emergency Management and Climate Readiness, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Transportation and Transit, and other provincial, local government, and Indigenous partners. It is responsible for designing and delivering integrated geospatial platforms, data, and analytics that support all phases of emergency management, from mitigation and preparedness through response and recovery, including systems such as the ClimateReadyBC, Rapid Damage Assessment, and evacuation mapping solutions.
The role contributes to advancing provincial disaster risk management by developing and operationalizing hazard data, risk assessment methods, and analytical tools aligned with legislative mandates, while also providing direct client support through a collaborative service model. This includes translating business needs into scalable geospatial solutions, integrating data and applications, and supporting real-time situational awareness during emergencies. The position also plays a key role in driving innovation, establishing standards, and building capacity across government through training, knowledge sharing, and the adoption of modern GIS technologies, ensuring consistent, trusted, and actionable information for decision-makers across jurisdictions.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Degree (or higher) in resource management, geography, remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), or a related field. Or,
- An equivalent combination of education and experience that meet the requirements outlined in the experience section.
- Minimum three (3) years GIS work experience* in a role predominantly responsible for GIS analysis, mapping and visualisation using the ESRI ArcGIS product suite.
- Minimum of two (2) years work experience* in a role predominantly responsible for the development of maps and dashboards using ESRI ArcGIS Online (e.g. story maps, experience builder, operations dashboard, Web AppBuilder, ESRI ArcGIS Hub).
- Minimum of two (2) years work experience* in geospatial analysis including a proven ability to manage and maintain GIS datasets to enterprise standards, including metadata development, QA/QC, and data governance.
- Minimum of one (1) year work experience* providing customer service and engaging with clients, partners or rights holders including Indigenous governments on sensitive and complex issues, with demonstrated cultural competency and respect for Indigenous data sovereignty.
NOTE: *Work experience can include co-op or similar work terms that are predominantly GIS work, but does not include course work and academic project work.
Preference may be given to applicants with work experience* in one (1) or more of the following:
- Developing training materials and conducting training sessions on the use of GIS solutions.
- Providing emergency response GIS support in an Emergency Operations Centre.
- Geospatial project management or coordination.
- Developing mobile geospatial solutions.
- Graphic design.
- Web site design and development (CSS/HTML).
- Python and/or other programming languages.
- Imagery and Remote Sensing analysis.

This position can be based out of any of the location(s) listed above.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
