The Team
The Policy & Legislation Division supports the Ministry of Finance by providing analysis and advice on economic, fiscal, and tax policy. Within the Division, the Finance Reporting and Enhanced Data Analysis Branch (FREDA) uses data to support fair and effective public policy. The team works on issues that affect people across British Columbia, including housing, income supports, and taxation. We value respectful collaboration, different perspectives, and thoughtful use of data in the public interest.
The Role
The Lead Data Scientist leads large and complex analytical projects that support tax policy, compliance, market regulation, and other ministry priorities. The role involves working with large datasets, building models, and interpreting results to inform decisions. The Lead Data Scientist provides clear analysis to senior leaders, works closely with policy and technical colleagues, and helps guide how data is used responsibly and consistently across the branch.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- University degree in economics, statistics, math, or similar quantitative discipline
- Experience using SQL to query a database
- Experience using R or Python programming languages.
- Experience leading project teams and acting as a technical resource to other staff
- At least four (4) years of experience leading complex research projects/assignments.
- At least four (4) years of experience providing informational materials, advice, and recommendations (both written and oral) to senior staff.
Preference may be given to applicants with:
- Graduate degree in a relevant discipline.
- Experience supervising staff.
- Experience building machine learning models.
- Experience of forensic data analytics or statistical fraud detection.

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 4 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
