Job Overview
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Aquatic Ecosystems and Freshwater Fisheries Branch! Within the Branch, the Aquatic Conservation Science Section leads conservation science and research initiatives that improve the collective understanding of our province’s species and ecosystems, their status, and threats. We develop decision support tools, guidance documents, and conservation and recovery strategies that influence decisions and activities impacting biodiversity and ecosystem resilience.
In this position, you will provide senior professional advisory services to the Aquatic Ecosystems and Freshwater Fisheries Branch and design decision support tools for the natural resource sector. Reporting to the Aquatic Invasive Fauna Specialist, this position provides senior expertise in GIS mapping, data analysis, synthesis, and modeling to translate complex biological data sets into a format that natural resource management decision makers can readily understand. This position provides a critical role in taking complex datasets and making them more accessible using a variety of interactive and innovative tools. For example, this position will provide professional expertise in spatial data analysis, coding pipelines and model development to support priority files across the Branch (e.g., invasive fauna and aquatic species at risk) including the data management, analysis, and visualizations for the Invasive Mussel Defence Program. In addition, this position will lead the development of new and existing resource materials such as program reports, public dashboards, and interactive maps.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Masters or PhD in natural resources, or equivalent and two years of related experience*, OR
- Undergraduate Degree in natural resources, or equivalent and three years of related experience*, OR
- Diploma in a natural resource or related field and five years of related experience*, OR
- An equivalent combination of education and related experience* may be considered.
*Related experience (outside of education) must include all of the following:
- At least two years experience in the processing, and analysis of complex scientific datasets.
- Manipulating complex scientific datasets using programming scripts to render, analyze and build data models with a strong preference for coding in R.
- At least two years’ experience designing, developing and maintaining spatial applications and preparing recommendations to the general public and/or decision makers with keen attention to detail.
- Performing integrated spatial analysis using coding pipelines and/or innovative tools to create custom products such as:
- dashboard platforms to display complex scientific data in an accessible format for a variety of applications, including public websites and decision support tools.
Preference may be given to applicants with 1 or more of the following:
- Experience communicating within multidisciplinary teams
- Education and/or experience in conservation biology, and/or aquatic ecology.
- Experience using standard data application tools, programming language, GIS technology, software and artificial intelligence platforms (e.g. ArcGIS/ArcPRO, ArcGIS model builder, R, Structured Query Language (SQL), ArcGIS Online (AGOL); Arcade; Java Scripting, QGIS, Python scripting)

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 3 days per week at home as per the Telework Agreement.
