The Team
The BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) contributes to the protection of society by conducting independent, effective and fair prosecutions and appeals at all levels of court and by striving to develop the most effective methods to administer criminal justice in the province. With approximately 550 Crown Counsel located across British Columbia, the BCPS is divided into five regions – North, Interior, Fraser, Vancouver, and Vancouver Island-Powell River. Criminal Appeals and Special Prosecutions (CASP) and BCPS Headquarters (HQ) are primarily located in Vancouver and Victoria.

The Role
As a Paralegal with the BC Prosecution Service, you will play a key role in supporting Crown Counsel with case preparation for court proceedings. In this fast-paced, high-profile environment, you’ll work closely with a collaborative team, handling a variety of legal services that require flexibility, organization, and excellent communication. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

Paralegal Growth (Level 1-2):

  • Secondary school graduation or equivalent;
  • Minimum of 18 months of recent (within the last 7 years) experience working as a Legal Assistant (or equivalent);
  • Stated intention to enrol in a certified Paralegal Certificate/Diploma/Degree Program within 18 months.

Preference may be given to applicants with the following:

  • Successful completion of a Legal Assistant certificate;
  • 1 year of post-secondary education (with an academic focus) in a related field;
  • More than 18 months of recent (within the last 7 years) experience working as a Legal Assistant (or equivalent).

Paralegal Growth (Level 3-4):

  • Secondary school graduation or equivalent;
  • Minimum of 2.5 years of experience working as a Legal Assistant (or equivalent);
  • Completion of 1 year of a certified Paralegal Certificate/Diploma/Degree program or equivalent.

Preference may be given to applicants with the following:

  • More than 2.5 years of experience working as a Legal Assistant (or equivalent).

Full Working Level (Paralegal 18):

  • Secondary school graduation or equivalent;
  • Minimum of 3.5 years of experience working as a Legal Assistant (or equivalent);
  • Completion of a recognized Paralegal Certificate/Diploma/Degree program or equivalent.

Preference may be given to applicants with the following:

  • More than 3.5 years of experience working as a Legal Assistant (or equivalent)

Paralegals at the full working level typically work independently and in close collaboration with Crown Counsel and are assigned more complex/sensitive prosecution files.

  • Travel may be a requirement of this position.

Currently there is one permanent position available.
This position can be based in any of the following BC Prosecution Service offices: Fort Nelson, Fort St. John, Dawson Creek, Prince George, Vanderhoof, Quesnel, Williams Lake, Smithers, Terrace or Prince Rupert.

An eligibility list may be established to fill both current and/or future permanent vacancies.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 3 days at home per week as per the Telework Agreement.
