The Team:
The Mine Competitiveness and Authorizations Division (MCAD) is a collaborative, team-oriented group within the Ministry of Mining and Critical Minerals, dedicated to supporting the responsible development of British Columbia’s mineral resources. Through strong coordination across regional offices, MCAD delivers consistent, high-quality regulatory and permitting processes that advance environmental stewardship, industry competitiveness, and Indigenous reconciliation.
The Role:
The Inspector of Mines - Permitting plays a hands-on role at the intersection of technical expertise, regulation, and real-world impact. As a statutory decision-maker, the position leads the review of Mines Act permit applications and conducts site inspections, ensuring mining activities meet rigorous environmental, safety, and regulatory standards. The role also involves meaningful engagement with Indigenous Nations, communities, and partners across government, bringing a thoughtful, balanced approach to decision-making that supports responsible resource development and long-term sustainability.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience:
- Degree in Engineering (mining, civil, environmental), Geology, Natural Resource Management, or a related discipline from an accredited institution, and three (3) years of current experience related to mineral exploration and/or mining operations; OR,
- Diploma in Mining Technology, Natural Resource Management, Forestry, or a related discipline from an accredited institution and five (5) years of current experience related to mineral exploration and/or mining operations.
- Experience in mining operations includes working in a professional or technical capacity on functioning mine sites, including aggregate, for a broad range of mining activities including exploration, access construction, mining methods and/or mine reclamation, and/or relevant provincial/federal experience in a natural resource regulatory compliance role.
- An equivalent combination of relevant education and recent, related experience may be considered.
- Must possess and maintain a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
Preference may be given to those with one (1) or more of the following:
- Current delegation of the Chief Permitting Officer or already a Statutory Decision Maker.
- Experience in a mining regulatory compliance role.
- Experience in mineral exploration.
- Experience with First Nations’ consultation processes.

About this Position:
There is currently one (1) permanent, full time position available in Cranbrook.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies in Cranbrook.
