Job Overview
The Caribou Recovery Biologist position sits within the Resource Stewardship Division (RSD) in the Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship (WLRS) and is primarily responsible for caribou recovery actions and habitat management. This position also works with other ministries, Indigenous Nations, governments, and interested parties to develop, implement, and monitor management actions and provincial strategies to ensure we are meeting or exceeding provincial and federal population and habitat objectives.
In the capacity of a Caribou Recovery Biologist, this position will be expected to provide professional and technical expertise to support the recovery and management of caribou and caribou habitat. Working closely with senior biologists and planners within the Cariboo Region and across the provincial Program, key activities will include planning, implementation, and monitoring of caribou related initiatives such as, but not limited to: caribou habitat assessment and management, habitat restoration, and supporting the implementation of intergovernmental agreements. This position may also provide subject matter expertise on herd planning initiatives in the broader context of land use planning, drafting of monitoring and technical reports, leading or supporting projects with both internal and external collaborators, and data entry and records management. While this position is focused on caribou, this position will also be expected to understand interactions with a diversity of wildlife species and habitats and may be asked to support projects pertaining to other species of management importance as well as other regions within BC. This position has both office and field-based components. 

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in biological sciences or related field, AND
  • Four (4) years of related experience*, OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and related experience*. 

*Related experience includes a combination of one or more of the following:

  • Experience conducting wildlife field-based biological sampling, analysis, and reporting.
  • Experience in conducting environmental monitoring and assessments related to wildlife habitat or populations.
  • Experience providing advice within a regulatory regime.

Professional Designation Requirement:

  • Registered (or eligible) as a Registered Professional Biologist (RP Bio) in B.C. with the College of Applied Biology within six months of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid British Columbia Class 5 driver's licence.

Preference may be given to applicants with the following: 

  • Experience leading or coordinating staff in wildlife related projects or field settings.
  • Experience working or collaborating with Indigenous Nations.

Willingness Statements:

  • Willing and physically able to carry equipment and supplies in difficult terrain.
  • Willing and able to conduct field work in all weather conditions and environments. This may including travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight or extended stay in camp conditions and operation of a variety of equipment.
  • Willing and able to meet safety standards of WorkSafe BC.

About this Position:
This position can be based in any of the following Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship offices: Williams Lake, Quesnel, 100 Mile House, or Alexis Creek.
This is a temporary opportunity until August 16, 2027. This position may be extended or become permanent.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.
