Description


The Team:
The Range Branch with the Ministry of Forests plays a meaningful role at the intersection of land stewardship and sustainable resource use, supporting the management of British Columbia’s vast rangelands. This team works closely with communities, ranchers, and other partners to ensure Crown lands are thoughtfully managed for grazing while protecting ecosystems, wildlife habitat, and long-term environmental values. With a steady focus on balancing economic and environmental priorities, this group brings together technical expertise, field knowledge, and a collaborative spirit to guide responsible range practices and maintain healthy landscapes for generations to come.

The Role:
The Director, Range Branch provides inspiring leadership for the province’s Range program, guiding the stewardship and sustainable use of Crown range resources while bringing balance to environmental, economic, and community priorities. This role sets the strategic direction for legislation, policy, and province-wide initiatives, while building strong relationships with partners, Indigenous communities, and the ranching sector to support a thriving and resilient landscape. With a steady hand on operations, people, and resources, the Director helps shape thoughtful decisions and forward-looking plans that benefit British Columbians today and into the future.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements:

  • University degree in Agriculture or Range Management and considerable (minimum of three (3) years) operational experience with Crown range management and related issues and challenges. An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience in the management and supervision of geographically dispersed, multi-disciplinary staff.
  • Experience negotiating/mediating solutions on Crown range.
  • Experience establishing and reconciling program and project objectives, priorities and budgets.
  • BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence (or equivalent).

Preference may be given for one (1) or more of the following:

  • Registered, or immediately eligible for registration (within six (6) months of employment) with the BC Institute of Agrologists (BCIA) as a Professional Agrologist.
  • Experience with Statutory Decision Making in the natural resource sector.

About this Position:
There is currently one (1) permanent, full time position available.
This position can be based in any office of the Ministry of Forests. The locations listed above are to assist applicants in searching for this opportunity and are not a complete list of locations.
Depending on the successful candidate’s location, a bi-weekly isolation allowance may apply.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work two (2) or more days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.
This position is excluded from union membership.
