The Team
This position will work in collaboration with the East and West Kootenay teams.  

The Okanagan West Kootenay Youth Justice team is a collaborative and close group of eight Youth Probation Officers and one Team Leader, who have established a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where everyone’s experiences are valued. The team is a mix of both seasoned and newer professionals, fostering a dynamic culture where members can be themselves, use innovative solutions, and learn from and rely on one another. With staff members based in Castlegar, Kelowna, Vernon and Penticton they work alongside a range of local community partners, such as Ministry Social Workers, school districts, RCMP, victim services, defense lawyers, youth forensic psychiatric services, etc., the team play an essential role in rehabilitation, community protection, and providing vital support services to youth and their families.

The Interior East Kootenay Youth Justice team is a dedicated, evolving group of nine Youth Probation Officers and one Team Leader. The team is a mix of newly trained and experienced Youth Probation Officers committed to supporting youth and their families. With staff members based in Williams Lake, Cranbrook, Merritt, and Kamloops, this team collaborates closely with Crown Counsel, RCMP, court staff, social workers, and various community partners, including Indigenous communities and First Nation Court elders. The team has grown in both size and expertise, demonstrating a strong commitment to making a positive impact. They value dedication to youth and families, as well as mutual support and teamwork, including fostering an inclusive and collaborative environment.

The Role
This Youth Probation Officer role provides case management and supervision to youth, ensuring they meet court orders while guiding them through challenging situations. Based in Creston, Castlegar, Nelson, or Trail you will travel regularly throughout the region, through all varieties of Kootenay weather, to collaborate with Ministry teams and community partners, and to deliver responsive support to our youth. Acting as an advocate, you will help young offenders take accountability and connect them with resources to support their growth and reduce risk of reoffence. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Human Services field.
    • NOTE: If your degree was obtained outside of Canada, you need to confirm it has been assessed for equivalency through the International Credential Evaluation Services (ICES). You must provide a comprehensive report and the MCFD supplemental report by the closing date of this posting to be considered.

*Human Services field includes: Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Counselling, Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Anthropology, Early Childhood Education, Indigenous Studies, Education, Theology, and Nursing.

Preference may be given to applicants with the following:

  • Experience working as either an Adult Probation Officer or a Fully Delegated Youth Probation Officer in a Canadian Jurisdiction.
  • Experience in a justice, educational or social service setting that involves the supervision of young people (12-17 years old) or adults.
  • Experience in a justice, educational or social service setting with counselling or conflict resolution that involves young people (12-17 years old) or adults.
  •  Applicants who self-identify as First Nations, Métis or Inuit with the required combination of education and experience.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License with no restriction or equivalent (i.e. from another Canadian Province).

About this Position:
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
There is presently one (1) positions available. This position can be based out of any of the locations listed above.
This is a temporary opportunity until January 3, 2028. This position may be extended or become permanent.
