Description

BC Timber Sales (BCTS) is a unique program of the Ministry of Forests (MOF). Working collaboratively with regional and district operations, BCTS plans, develops, and auctions a substantial portion of the province’s annual available timber volume. BCTS operates as a for profit entity within a government organization.  Its goal is to provide credible representative price and cost benchmark data for the Market Pricing System through auctions of timber harvested from British Columbia’s public land. BCTS operations are guided by three overarching principles, forest sector safety, reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and sustainable forest management.

The Team:

You will be joining the Indigenous Relations Team within the Kootenay Business Area of BC Timber Sales. The team works closely with subject matter experts across the full range of BCTS operational activities, including Planning, Development, Engineering, Harvesting, and Silviculture. Indigenous Relations provides clear and practical guidance that helps staff navigate engagement and consultation requirements in a coordinated and culturally informed way. The Role:

As an Indigenous Relations Team Lead, you will support BCTS staff as they integrate Indigenous interests into planning and operational decisions. You will guide Indigenous Relations personnel, coach operational staff, and help deliver consultation processes that are timely, consistent, and legally sound. Your leadership helps the Province uphold the honour of the Crown while reducing uncertainty for both Indigenous communities and BCTS teams. You will take on complex engagement files, provide recommendations to decision makers, and help develop agreements that reflect shared interests and local values. Job Requirements:

  • Degree in a field related to the work of the program area and 3 years of experience related to natural resource or Indigenous Peoples relationship management or a Diploma in a related field and 4 years of experience
  • Experience in successfully negotiating/mediating solutions with Indigenous Peoples’ communities.
  • Must possess at minimum a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s License that does not limit or restrict the ability to conduct the duties of the job.

Provisos: 

  • Must be willing and able to travel to meet job requirements.
  • Must be willing to work extended hours with limited notice, including evenings and weekends.
  • Must be willing and able to travel in fixed and/or rotary winged aircraft and/or watercraft.

Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:

  • Experience with contract management.
  • Experience or education in forestry or natural resource management.
  • Experience or education related to Indigenous Peoples relationship management.
  • Experience conducting research and analysis related to land use, resource management, social or economic development issues.
  • Demonstrated experience in interest-based negotiation or mediation.

About this Position:
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement and successfully completed probation period.
An eligibility list may be established for similar vacancies within the BC Timber Sales Kootenay Business Area (Nelson, Castlegar, Grand Forks, Cranbrook, Nakusp).
