Job Overview
The Emergency Management Technician supports the British Columbia emergency management structure including planning, preparedness, response, and recovery at the regional level, as well as the integration of key regional partners and maintains critical linkages to local government, provincial and federal staff, First Nations, industry, volunteers, and the public. As a Provincial Regional Emergency Operations Centre (PREOC) staff member, the position may direct multi-disciplinary teams of staff, provincial ministries, and contractors during planning, preparedness, response, and recovery. The position assists by maintaining the operational readiness of a PREOC, including 24/7 staff availability, and participates in Coordinated Operation Response in Emergencies (CORE) member training and exercising.   

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Degree, diploma or certificate in emergency management, public administration, or a related discipline AND a minimum of two (2) years related work or volunteer experience*; OR 
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Have, or be able to immediately obtain, a valid Class 5 BC driver's license (or equivalent) that does not limit or restrict the ability to conduct the duties of the job.

Related experience must include all of the following:

  • Experience working as part of a team, addressing strategic initiatives, and coordinating multi-agency committees or working groups.
  • Experience dealing with natural hazards, risk assessment and/or emergency response.
  • Experience working with standard computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:

  • Experience in the development of procedures, standards, and guidelines.
  • Experience working and engaging with First Nations communities and/or organizations.
  • Experience in the delivery of training programs.
  • Experience with financial administration.
  • Experience and training with Incident Command System and/or BC Emergency Management Systems (BCEMS).

Willingness Statements:

  • Willing and able to travel to locations throughout the province.
  • Willing and able to work on-call and extended hours during emergency activations and participate in operational deployments throughout the province.
