Job Overview
The Inspector of Mines - Permitting is responsible for review and adjudication of Mines Act Permit applications for regional mines (mineral and coal exploration, aggregate, quarries and placer mining) under the authority of the Mines Act. Included in the work of application adjudication is participating in consultation with Indigenous Nations and advancing Indigenous reconciliation, as well as engaging in interagency conversations across the Natural Resource Sector in support of robust and durable decision-making. In addition to the role as a statutory decision maker, the Inspector of Mines-Permitting conducts inspections of mines consistent with MCM’s role in regulating the mining industry.

Qualifications:
Education, Training & Experience:

  • Degree in Engineering (mining, civil, environmental), Geology, Natural Resource Management, or a related discipline from an accredited institution, and two (2) years of current experience related to mineral exploration and/or mining operations; OR,
  • Diploma in Mining Technology, Natural Resource Management, Forestry, or a related discipline from an accredited institution and four (4) years of current experience related to mineral exploration and/or mining operations. 
  • Experience in mining operations includes working in a professional or technical capacity on functioning mine sites, including aggregate, for a broad range of mining activities including exploration, access construction, mining methods and/or mine reclamation, and/or relevant provincial/federal experience in a natural resource regulatory compliance role.
  • An equivalent combination of relevant education and recent, related experience may be considered.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence.

Preference may be given to those with one (1) or more of the following:

  • Current delegation of the Chief Permitting Officer or already a Statutory Decision Maker.
  • Experience in a mining regulatory compliance role.
  • Experience in mineral exploration.
  • Experience with First Nations’ consultation processes.

About this Position:
There is currently one (1) permanent, full time position available in Smithers.
This location receives a $39.92 bi-weekly isolation allowance.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies in Smithers.
