The Team
The North Fraser Youth Justice Team encompasses the communities of Burnaby, New Westminster, the Tri-Cities and Ridge Meadows.The team includes 6 Youth Probation Officers (YPOs) and 1 Restorative Justice (RJ) Specialist. This posting is for the Tri-Cities location. The Tri-Cities Team includes 2 full time YPOs and the RJ Specialist. It is located in the community of Port Moody and is a Local Workstation (LWS) site. There are numerous teams co-located at the site including child and family welfare teams; Indigenous teams; Strengthening, Abilities and Journey's of Empowerment (SAJE) and Mental Health teams. The community includes the Port Coquitlam Courthouse, Cabe and Goal school programs and Port Moody Police and Coquitlam RCMP.

The Role
Youth Probation Officers in British Columbia supervise and support young offenders, working with courts, communities, and families to promote rehabilitation and public safety. They work under the Ministry of Children and Family Development and are responsible for managing the risk young offenders pose in the community. Their duties include providing supervision, guidance, and assistance to youth in conflict with the law, collaborating with courts, community agencies, and other resources to achieve positive outcomes. They also develop safe, professional relationships with clients, support Indigenous youth through culturally informed practices, and apply evidence-based approaches like the Risk-Needs-Responsivity model to encourage pro-social behavior and reduce recidivism.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

Job Specific Experience:

  • Minimum of one (1) year experience gained working as either an Adult Probation Officer or a Fully Delegated Youth Probation Officer in a Canadian Jurisdiction.

Preferences

  • Experience in a justice, educational or social service setting that involves the supervision of young people or adults.
  • Experience in a justice, educational or social service setting with counselling or conflict resolution.
  • Applicants who self-identify as First Nations, Métis or Inuit with the required combination of education and experience.

About this Position:
This position will be based out of the Port Moody location.
Flexible work options are available. This position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies in the North Fraser region (Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Burnaby, Maple Ridge, New Westminster).
