The Team
The Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) is a dynamic workplace with a talented, team-oriented staff and a mandate that includes working on some of the largest resource development projects in Canada. The EAO is a stand-alone, neutrally administered regulator that undertakes rigorous, thorough reviews of major projects in British Columbia. These reviews require active engagement by EAO staff with Indigenous groups, government agencies and the public to administer environmental assessments. The work of the EAO is central to Indigenous reconciliation, sustainability and the economy by ensuring environmental, economic, social, health, and cultural effects from proposed major projects are understood and managed in the regulatory process. The EAO values teamwork and collaboration, and works hard to support staff growth and development.
DIVISIONAL OVERVIEW
The Communications and Engagement team is responsible for internal and external communications for the EAO, including public engagement activities for all project assessments. The team’s mandate is to increase public understanding of environmental assessment processes and outcomes and support more meaningful public participation in these assessments, thereby building confidence in the EAO’s role as a neutral regulator. The team supports public comment periods, including open houses and virtual information sessions, throughout the environmental assessment process. The team also provides expertise for public engagement policy, procedure and guidance, manages the EAO’s engagement platform, EPIC.engage, and provides issues management and media relations advice related to project assessments and other initiatives of the EAO.
The Role
Reporting to the Manager, Outreach and Stakeholder Engagement this position provides public engagement coordination and project management support for a variety of public engagement projects and activities. The Engagement Specialist plans outreach and engagement, and monitors deliverables to ensure projects are on time and meet quality standards.
The Engagement Specialist recommends approaches for public engagement and coordinates and carries out various engagement activities including web surveys and content, virtual information sessions and in-person community meetings for project assessment public comment periods, in close collaboration with other EAO divisions. Responsibilities also include coordinating development of materials for marketing, outreach, presentations, information-sharing, reporting and briefings, as well as gathering, analyzing and summarizing feedback from engagement participants. The Engagement Specialist provides advice and briefings on public engagement evaluation, improvements or results, and supports communications activities including issues management, media relations, announcements and content development related to major projects assessed or monitored by the EAO.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in public engagement-related field ( e.g. Communications, Public Relations, Business Administration, or Public Administration) and 2 years’ related experience; Or,
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
*Must include minimum of 2 years’ related experience in each of the following:
- Experience working in a role primarily or fully responsible for communications and/or public engagement.
- Experience in creating effective engagement surveys
- Experience gathering and interpreting engagement-related data from diverse sources using various tools and techniques (e.g. statistical software, survey administration, in-person consultation, data visualization tools).
- Experience writing reports, briefings and public facing communications and /or engagement materials for various audiences.
Preferences may be given to applicants with the following:
- Certification in IAP2 and/or supplemental coursework in public engagement, public relations, or communications beyond the education requirement above.
- Experience using web content management systems.
- Project management experience.
- Experience working within the natural resource sector.
