Job Overview
Housed within the Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship, Foundational Information and Technology Branch, the BC Conservation Data Centre (CDC) supports the conservation of BC’s biodiversity by collecting and sharing scientific data and information about species and ecosystems occurring in the province. The primary functions of the BC CDC are to:

  • Compile a list of species and ecosystems that occur in BC: based on current literature and expert advice.
  • Assess conservation status ranks: collaborating with scientists and experts across the country, the CDC assigns status ranks for BC's species and ecosystems according to their level of risk of being lost.
  • Map known locations (Element Occurrences): map the locations of species or ecosystems that are at risk of being lost and compiles information on these occurrences.
  • Make data and information available: the CDC disseminates data and information about species and ecosystems in BC in easily accessible formats to serve its wide-ranging client base.

The Conservation Data and Information Analyst is within the Data and Information Unit. This position manages species and ecosystem data, systems, tools, applications, products and related information to ensure the availability of accurate, science-based information to support natural resource management decision making. The Conservation Data and Information Analyst functions in a dynamic environment and must work in close collaboration with other units in the CDC, NatureServe staff, partners, and clients to ensure effective data management solutions.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Geography, Resource Management, Biology, Geomatics, Computer Science or related area, or equivalent degree.
  • An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience (at least 2 years) with data management principles, relational data modelling, database administration, structured analysis and design, and documentation of business requirements.
  • Experience (at least 2 years) working with relational databases such as Oracle and MS Access.
  • Experience (at least 2 years) building and executing SQL queries.
  • Experience working with complex natural resource data and related information in support of resource management.
  • Experience developing and managing spatial and attribute data sets.

Preference may be given to those with one (1) or more of the following: 

  • Experience with Oracle Enterprise Database Administration.
  • Experience with managing datasets containing scientific names.
  • Experience using Linnaean taxonomy in a database context.
  • Experience working with clients to develop data management solutions.
  • Experience programming/scripting (e.g. Python, R, VBA, JavaScript etc.) for the purposes of data management, visualization and scientific communication.
  • Experience with NatureServe’s Biotics database.
  • Experience with NatureServe’s data model and methods of occurrence mapping and element ranking.

About this Position:

This temporary appointment may be extended or become a permanent position.
