Job Overview
This position is the researcher and scientific advisor in the field of natural resource management, who conducts applied research to support science-based decision-making and provides expert professional advice relating to silviculture. This position identifies needs, conducts research, provides research consultation, and prepares extension materials related to silviculture and silvicultural systems.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements:

• Thesis-based PhD specializing in Forestry, Forest Ecology or closely related Forest Science specialty and one (1) year of directly related experience; OR,
• Thesis-based Master of Science Degree specializing in Forestry, Forest Ecology or closely related Forest Science specialty, and three (3) years of directly related experience.

Directly related experience includes either of the following:

• Planning and conducting research in silviculture, silvicultural systems, forest ecology, timber supply or growth and yield modelling, or a closely related resource science field; and/or,
• Operational silviculture experience to a total of one (1) year of the required related experience.

Professional Registration and Certification Requirements:

• Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) in BC with Forest Professionals BC (FPBC). Note: “Immediately eligible for registration” means meeting all requirements for full professional registration and completing the process of obtaining full registration with the relevant BC professional association within six (6) months of employment.

Preference may be given to those with one (1) or both of the following:

• Contract management experience; and/or,
• Supervisory experience.

Additional Requirements:

• Must be able to work physically outdoors in a range of weather conditions in remote areas.
• Must hold, or obtain within one year of hiring a Level 1 First Aid Certification.
• Must be willing to fly in planes and helicopters and travel by small boat.
• Must have a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence or equivalent.
• Must hold, or may be required to obtain ATV Operator and Snow Machine Operator certifications.

About this Position:

There is currently one (1) permanent, full time position available.
This position can be located in one of the following Ministry of Forests’ offices: Campbell River, Chilliwack, Nanaimo, Port Alberni, Port McNeill, Powell River, or Squamish.
Depending on the successful candidate’s location, a bi-weekly isolation allowance may apply.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies in the above locations.
A Criminal Record Check (CRC) will be required.
