Description


The Team:
The Range Branch in the Ministry of Forests is the provincial centre of expertise for rangeland management in BC, supporting sustainable grazing, healthy ecosystems, and responsible stewardship of Crown land. The team provides leadership in policy, practices, ecology, and land management that helps balance environmental, agricultural, and community interests across the province.

The Role:
The Provincial Invasive Species Officer provides provincial leadership for invasive plant management in British Columbia. Responsible for setting strategy, policy, standards, and program direction, this role leads efforts to prevent, detect, and respond to invasive species threats across the province. Working at the intersection of science, policy, and partnerships, the position drives coordinated action with First Nations, local governments, industry, researchers, and other agencies while leading a team of specialists and influencing decisions with province-wide impact. The leadership and decisions of this role help protect millions of hectares of BC’s lands and waters, shaping the long-term health, resilience, and productivity of ecosystems across the province.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Master of Science in Natural Resource Management or a related field (i.e. Range Sciences, Agriculture or Environmental Sciences) with extensive experience (at least 15 years) in invasive species or plant management including working knowledge of integrated pest management principles and ecologically-based invasive plant management approaches; or,
  • Bachelor of Science in one of these fields with at least 17 years of related experience.
  • Experience managing technical and/or professional staff in resource management and developing and managing annual budgets.
  • Experience negotiating/mediating solutions in natural resource management and effectively resolving complex situations including conflict resolution.
  • Experience in and knowledge of First Nations and public consultation processes dealing with complex resource management issues.

Professional Registration and Certification Requirements:

  • Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a Registered Professional Agrologist (PAg) with the BC Institute of Agrologists (BCIA). Note: “Immediately eligible for registration” means meeting all requirements for full professional registration and completing the process of obtaining full registration with the relevant BC professional association within six (6) months of employment.

Additional Requirements:

  • A valid BC driver’s licence.
  • Extensive travel required.
  • Must meet safety standards of WorkSafeBC.
  • Conduct field work which may include travel to remote areas by vehicle, ATV, boat, air or foot, overnight or extended stay in rough camp conditions and outdoor work in all weather conditions.

About this Position:
There is currently one (1) permanent, full time position available.
This position can be based in one of the following locations: Cranbrook, Kamloops, Kelowna, Nanaimo, Nelson, Prince George, Vernon; other locations may be considered.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
