The Team
The Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation (MIRR) provides a leadership role to the Province of British Columbia in its reconciliation efforts with First Nations and Indigenous Peoples. A key component of reconciliation involves working collaboratively and respectfully with First Nations, and building and maintaining partnerships with all levels of government, industry, and partners. These partnerships create opportunities to collaborate on shared reconciliation goals of First Nations, Indigenous Peoples and the Province. Reconciliation efforts work to support the development of sustainable, healthy, and resilient Indigenous communities. The Government to Government and Community Relations Division (GGCR) plays a fundamental role in supporting government’s reconciliation mandate across the Province. Our role is to lead engagements and negotiations with First Nations and Indigenous Peoples, and advance meaningful opportunities at the regional level.
The Role
The Regional Director provides the overall direction and leadership for program delivery in the region, supports cross-ministry resource management initiatives and delivers on the ministry’s goals in the region. The regional goals include the negotiation and implementation of short long-term reconciliation agreements, negotiation and support for treaty negotiations, implementation support and oversight of negotiated treaties, and outreach and relationship development with First Nations and third-party partners. With respect to urgent and unpredictable critical incidents, the Regional Director also has an important operational role in supporting and/or coordinating local and regional activities on behalf of all related government ministries. Reporting to the Regional Executive Director, the Regional Director has the responsibility to ensure coordinated and timely delivery of ministry goals through a team of professional and technical staff. The role demands a high degree of senior managerial skills, technical knowledge, professional judgment, excellence in communication skills, as well as the ability to use diplomacy, tact and influence in developing and maintaining critical strategic and operational relationships with First Nations, colleagues, senior officials of government and agencies and industry leaders.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- A Master’s degree in a resource management related field (e.g. land planning, forestry, geography, natural resource management, land management, agriculture, natural resource biology, environmental law/management, urban/regional land use planning, land surveying, geology, engineering related to natural resources, science, public/business administration, resource management, geoscience) and a minimum 3 years of combined related experience, OR
- A Bachelor’s Degree in a resource management related field e.g.., land planning, forestry, geography, natural resource management, land management, agriculture, natural resource biology, environmental law/management, urban/regional land use planning, land surveying, geology, engineering related to natural resources, science, public/business administration, resource management, geoscience) and a minimum of 5 years of combined related experience OR
- An equivalent combination of education and or training and experience may be considered.
Related experience includes:
- Resource management planning or program management experience;
- Leading complex, multi-party negotiations with First Nations and/or the federal government; or comparable recent negotiation experience leading bi-lateral, multi-party negotiations in matters of similar profile and significance;
- Working in a cross-cultural setting including issue resolution, negotiation and relationship development;
- Managing issues, solving strategic problems, providing leadership expertise, including the formulation and articulation and accomplishment of goals through gaining commitment and securing resources; and,
- Providing leadership to teams in the successful achievement of ministry goals.
Preference may be given to applicants with the following:
- A Master’s degree with minimum 5 years of combined related experience.
- A Bachelor's degree with minimum 7 years of combined related experience.
- Applicants who identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Métis or Inuit)

About this Position:
This position can be based in any of the following Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation offices: Cranbrook, Invermere, Creston, Nakusp, Nelson, Grand Forks, Rossland, Trail, Revelstoke, Golden, Kamloops, Vernon and Merritt.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 5 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
