BC Timber Sales (BCTS) is a unique program of the Ministry of Forests (MOF). Working collaboratively with regional and district operations, BCTS plans, develops, and auctions a substantial portion of the province’s annual available timber volume. BCTS operates as a for profit entity within a government organization.  Its goal is to provide credible representative price and cost benchmark data for the Market Pricing System through auctions of timber harvested from British Columbia’s public land. BCTS operations are guided by three overarching principles, forest sector safety, reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and sustainable forest management.

The Team:

The BCTS East Kootenay field team is an established group of nine professionals dedicated to sustainable forest management. Working alongside Planning Foresters, Practices Foresters, and Technologists, all reporting to a Woodlands Supervisor, you’ll be part of a team that collaborates with Indigenous Relations and Forest Road Engineering teams. The Role:

In this role, you will be responsible for contract management, coordinating technical activities, and ensuring adherence to legislative and environmental standards. You’ll also provide technical expertise in areas such as tenure development, road and block layout, silviculture, and forestry contract administration. Your work will contribute directly to the Market Pricing System, supporting timber auctions and enhancing forest practices, ultimately impacting sustainable forest management for the benefit of communities and the environment. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

• A Registered Professional Forester (RPF), or be eligible for registration as an RPF with Forest Professionals British Columbia (FPBC) and two (2) years of experience in operational field forestry activities. 

Operational field forestry activities include the following: 

• • Timber harvesting monitoring/conformance
  • Cut-block development
  • Forest road engineering
  • Silviculture
  • Timber tenure development and administration
  • Planning integrated resource management
• Must possess at minimum a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence that does not limit or restrict the ability to conduct the duties of the job.

Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:

• Experience in more than one (1) operational field forestry activity.
• Experience working with Indigenous Peoples.
• Experience in contract management.

PROVISOS 

• Must be willing and able to withstand the rigors of fieldwork.
• Must be willing to work in adverse weather conditions.
• Must be willing and able to travel to meet job requirements.
• Must be willing and able to travel in fixed and or rotary winged aircraft and or watercraft.
• Must be able to maintain membership with the Association of British Columbia Forest Professionals as a member in good standing.

About this Position:
This is a one year temporary opportunity until September 19, 2027. This temporary opportunity may be extended or become permanent.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
An eligibility list may be established to fill temporary and permanent vacancies within the BC Timber Sales Kootenay Business Area, Cranbrook.
Applicants who do not fully meet the required qualifications may be considered for this position, but at a lower classification.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
A Criminal Record Check (CRC) is required.

Professional Designation: YES - You must be registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) with Forest Professionals BC (FPBC). Note: "Immediately eligible for registration" means meeting all requirements for full professional registration and completing the process of obtaining full registration with the relevant BC professional association within six (6) months of employment.
Applicants currently registered, or eligible for registration within six (6) months of employment, with FPBC as an Allied Science Forester in Training (ASFIT) or Forester in Training (FIT), may be considered for this position at the Licensed Science Officer 1A level.
