Description

The Team
The Coast Team seeks to build relationships and find a positive path forward with the 102+ Nations in the area. This includes working to implementing modern and historic treaties, negotiating new treaties and reconciliation, social and economic agreements with the goal of building meaningful partnerships across the Coast.

The Role
The Negotiator participates, on behalf of the province, in the tripartite negotiation of comprehensive treaties and other agreements with First Nations and the Federal Government, as well as incremental reconciliation agreements, and leads other discussions with First Nations as required . The Negotiator leads substantive negotiations, provides strategic planning advice and approaches to negotiations and formulates a broad spectrum of negotiation strategies (e.g., natural resources, social, health, children and families, etc.) through consultation with government agencies and partners.

Qualifications:

•    Master’s degree in a relevant area and 3 years of *recent related experience; or
•    University degree in a relevant area and 5 years of *recent related experience; or
•    Technical diploma in a relevant area and 7 years of *recent related experience.

*Related Experience must include all of the following:

  • Experience leading interest-based negotiations.
  • Experience leading professional multi-disciplinary team in a highly intense working environment.
  • Experience providing strategic advice to the minister, deputy minister, ministry executive, senior government officials (or private sector equivalent) on project/negotiations status.
  • Experience in multi-party negotiations in a cross-cultural setting.
  • Experience in project management, including planning, development and organizing and manage concurrent projects with multiple, competing priorities and rigid deadlines.

Preference may be given to applicants with the following:
•    Individuals who identify as Indigenous.
•    Experience working with Indigenous organizations and/or communities.

Provisos:

  • Willingness and ability to travel. Frequent travel is a requirement of this position. Incumbents must be willing and able to travel throughout the province up to 70% of the time for extended periods with little notice.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 BC driver’s license and be legally able to rent a vehicle in British Columbia.

This is a temporary opportunity until October 1, 2027. This position may be extended or become permanent.

This position can be based out of any of the location(s) listed above.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
