Job Overview

The Senior Biologist provides professional oversight, strategic direction, and technical expertise to support wildlife and ecosystem stewardship across the South Coast Region. This position supervises professional staff, supports sound and defensible decision-making within regulatory frameworks, and leads the delivery of priority regional wildlife and ecosystems initiatives.

In this role, you will shape and guide regional wildlife and habitat stewardship planning, working across ministries and in close collaboration with Indigenous Nations, local partners, and stakeholders. You will play a key role in advancing wildlife and habitat protection and conservation efforts, as well as leading and supporting species-specific management and recovery projects.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

• Master's degree in biological sciences or a related field and a minimum of two (2) years of combined experience in two (2) or more of the related experience areas listed below, OR
• Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or a related field and a minimum of three (3) years of combined experience in two (2) or more of the related experience areas listed below
• A valid Class 5 B.C. driver’s licence or equivalent.

Related experience includes:

• Experience interpreting and applying environmental management legislation and policy (e.g., Forest and Range Practices Act, Wildlife Act, Land Act, Federal Species at Risk Act).
• Experience leading staff in project or field settings.
• Experience in public and First Nations consultation processes on natural resource management issues.

Preference may be given to applicants with the following:

• Supervisory experience.
• Experience in wildlife management, species-at-risk conservation, and ecosystem-based planning.
• Experience in the design and analysis of complex ecological studies.
• Experience assessing the impacts of proposed developments on species/habitats and providing mitigation measures to offset adverse effects.
• Experience working collaboratively with First Nations on natural resource management issues.
• Experience in providing expert advice and recommendations to senior decision makers on natural resource management issues.

Professional Registration and Certification Requirements

• Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a Registered Professional Biologist (RP Bio), with the College of Applied Biology (CAB).
  • Note: “Immediately eligible for registration” means meeting all requirements for full professional registration and completing the registration process with the relevant BC professional association within six (6) months of employment

Willingness statements or provisos

• Must meet safety standards of Work Safe BC.
• Must be willing and able to conduct physically demanding field work.
• Must be willing and able to conduct field work which may include the following: travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight or extended stay in rough camp conditions and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
• Must be willing and able to carry and operate a variety of equipment, as required.

About this Position:

This is a temporary opportunity until August 13th, 2027. This temporary opportunity may become permanent.
This position can be based in any of the following Ministry of Water, Land & Stewardship office: Surrey, Squamish, Chilliwack, Nanaimo, Victoria.
Remote work is allowed, this position can work up to full time from their home in British Columbia subject to an approved telework agreement. The locations listed above are to assist applicants in searching for this opportunity and are not a complete list of locations.
