The Team
The Forest Inventory Ground Sampling team is a tight-knit group of six forestry professionals who are passionate about forest inventory. They bring unique strengths and perspectives to the table and collaborate closely with other specialists, including GIS experts, data analysts, and forest researchers. This hard-working team plays a critical role in providing direct support and validation for the provincial forest inventory layer, expanding and maintaining the provincial inventory monitoring and growth and yield programs, and supporting innovative lidar enhanced inventories.

The Role
As an Inventory Ground Sampling Specialist, you are responsible for developing and managing contracts with third-party contractors for inventory ground plots, conducting quality assurance on-site, and continuously improving ground sampling procedures and data collection tools. Your work will directly support the provincial forest inventory layer, a crucial component of land management decisions in BC, impacting citizens across the province. This position offers a balanced mix of field and office work, exposure to remote and beautiful areas of BC, and the opportunity to contribute to meaningful, high-impact projects in forest sustainability, which are linked to everything from species-at-risk habitat, to old growth, to environmental sustainability, to First Nations’ reconciliation.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

•    Diploma in Forestry (or related discipline), and a minimum of five (5) years of directly related forest inventory experience; or, an equivalent combination of related education and experience. 
•    Registered as a Registered Forest Technologist with Forest Professionals British Columbia (FPBC), or able to transfer a current membership to FPBC within six (6) months of employment. Confirmation of registration/eligibility is required before an offer of employment can be made.
•    Experience with manipulating, analyzing, or processing inventory, growth and yield, or experimental plot ground sample data.
•    Field experience measuring forest samples, or related activity.
•    Experience in consulting or negotiating solutions in natural resource management.
•    Required to be Active and Net Factor Certified in BC Forest Inventory Ground Sampling.
•    Must have Valid BC Class 5 (or equivalent) Driver’s Licence.

*Related education and experience must include each of the following:
•    A degree in a related science field (e.g., Biology or Geography).
•    Experience with collecting, storing, and manipulating field data to a defined standard.
•    Experience working in a field-based position, preferably in a natural resource field.

Provisos:
•    Meet safety standards of WorkSafe BC.
•    May be required to operate a variety of equipment.
•    Willing and able to conduct field work which may include travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air, or foot, overnight or extended stay in rough camp conditions, and outdoor work in difficult terrain in all weather conditions.
•    Willing and able to fly in helicopters, and enter/exit helicopters in potentially challenging field locations.

About this Position:
This position can be located in Victoria, Prince George, or Nelson; Kamloops may also be considered.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
