The Team
The Local Government Finance Unit has a dozen members and has existed for well over 20 years. The objective of the unit is to monitor and maintain local governments’ financial sustainability, ensuring they can meet the service needs of their communities, now and into the future. We help local governments provide the water, sewer, recreation and other services that make communities in BC thrive. We are a close knit group that help local governments and each other with interesting financial issues faced by local governments.
The Role
The Unit has five functions.
1. Review of local government bylaws and other requests that require approval of the Inspector of Municipalities (Inspector) or the Minister to be effective
2. Management of disbursement of unconditional grants, regional funding agreements and grants in lieu of taxes to local governments
3. Intake and quality control of local government financial information and publication of that information on provincial webpages
4. Provide subject matter expertise on the legislation for local government finance
5. Liaison with partners with similar interest in the financial sustainability of local governments. These include the Municipal Finance Authority (MFA), the Government Financial Officers Association of BC (GFOABC), the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) and BC Assessment.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- A diploma in a related field such as Finance, Public Administration, Law, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- A professional accounting designation recognized in Canada (such as CPA)
- Experience in business case and financial analysis.
- Preference may be given to candidates with additional years of experience beyond the minimum required for the role.

About this Position:
This is a temporary/auxiliary opportunity until 09/03/2027. This position may be extended or become permanent.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and/or permanent vacancies.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
