Job Overview
The Forest Landscape Planning (FLP) Branch within the Provincial Operations Division (POD) is responsible for leading implementation of the new FLP program in the Ministry of Forests. This includes the development and extension of provincial policy, guidance, communications and training materials for the FLP development process, engagement with provincial stakeholders, coordination of provincial governance structures for FLP program direction and the management of forest landscape modelling and assessment services for FLP tables.
The FLP Team Lead provides leadership and senior professional expertise for the implementation and continuous improvement of the FLP framework, as set out in the Forest and Range Practices Act (FRPA). The FLP Team Lead champions and coordinates the implementation and interpretation of FLP related legislation, policy, guidance and related activities that are critical to the achievement of Ministry goals and objectives for Forest Landscape Planning. The position leads a small team accountable for supporting FLP projects in the delivery of forest modelling and assessment services and extension of FLP legislation, policy, guidance and training.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Degree in Forestry or Natural Resource Management and a minimum of three (3) years of experience in forestry or natural resource management, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Experience:
- Senior-level experience in leading or delivering resource planning and management at the forest management unit or landscape level.
- Senior professional or management level experience in a forestry or natural resource management field with direct involvement in the development of policy, legislation, regulation, best practices or operational standards.
- Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams at a regional or provincial scale and being accountable for managing assigned resources, meeting project goals and achieving results.
- Experience leading, undertaking, or interpreting forest estate modelling or ecological modelling to support resource management decision making.
- Experience communicating complex policy matters and providing professional advice and recommendation to diverse audiences, including drafting or preparing complex written analyses, briefings, technical reports, policy drafts and other documentation.
- Experience supervising staff.
Professional Registration and Certification Requirements:
- Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) in BC with Forest Professionals BC (FPBC). Note: “Immediately eligible for registration” means meeting all requirements for full professional registration and completing the process of obtaining full registration with the relevant BC professional association within six (6) months of employment.
Preference may be given to those with:
- Experience engaging or consulting with Indigenous Nations; and/or,
- Experience leading or undertaking socio-economic and environmental assessment for resource projects or programs.
Additional Requirements:
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
- Must be willing and able to travel throughout the province to deal with policy-related matters.
- Must be willing and able to work irregular hours to represent Branch and Ministry interests.

About this Position:
There is currently one (1) permanent, full-time position available.
This position can be based in one of the following locations: Kamloops, Nanaimo, Nelson, Prince George, Smithers, Victoria, or Williams Lake.
Depending on the successful candidate’s location, a bi-weekly isolation allowance may apply.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
