Job Overview
Reporting to an excluded manager, Forest Genetics, the Research Team Lead is accountable for the supervision of Forest Genetics staff at the professional and/or technical level. This position manages staff and financial resources, ensures achievement of and evaluates the outcomes of program goals and applies legislation, policies and professional standards. This position and team responsibilities are to prepare and implement breeding and related research plans for various tree species in support of Ministry and Forest Genetics Council tree improvement goals: To design and carry out comprehensive genetic improvement strategies and research plans for economically and ecologically important tree species that meet high scientific standards and client’s needs; to maintain effective client contact to ensure up-to-date objectives, awareness of plans and progress, and the benefits of tree improvement are rapidly incorporated into operational practice; to provide extension, education and communication services to internal and external clients and stakeholders; and to share scientific knowledge gains and findings with the scientific community and peers.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Doctorate in a field related to forestry, agriculture, biology or the natural resources with a minimum of two (2) additional years of work in an operational research program* in a related field (forestry, horticulture or agriculture); or,
  • Master's Degree in a field related to forestry, agriculture, biology or the natural resources with a minimum of four (4) additional years of work in an operational research program* in a related field (forestry, horticulture or agriculture).
    *Operational research program is a research program that focuses on designing experiments that guide commercial operations.
  • At least one (1) year of demonstrated experience leading/supervising professional and/or technical personnel in the past five (5) years.
  • Demonstrated experience planning and implementing research projects including research field trials related to genetic improvement in traits of interest and/or generate information that leads to forest tree genetic resource management decisions (graduate work does not qualify).
  • Demonstrated experience in program* budget tracking and financial management with work experience related to tracking expenditures and managing project budgeting. *Program refers to multiple concurrent projects managed by proponent or by proponent’s direct reports.
  • Demonstrated experience in scientific research, publishing, participation and presentations in scientific meetings.
  • At least one (1) year of experience coordinating with clients, stakeholders and/or end users.
  • At least one (1) year of experience in an operational tree breeding program or operational tree seed orchard management.
  • Experience with conflict management.

Professional Registration and Certification Requirements:

  • Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) with Forest Professionals BC (FPBC) or as a Registered Professional Agrologist (PAg) with the BC Institute of Agrologists (BCIA). Note: “Immediately eligible for registration” means meeting all requirements for full professional registration and completing the process of obtaining full registration with the relevant BC professional association within six (6) months of employment.

Preference may be given to those with one (1) or more of the following:

  • Degree in Forestry (Bachelor’s Degree or higher).
  • Experience working on a Joint Occupational Health and Safety committee.
  • PhD or Master’s Degree in Forest Genetics or Tree Breeding.
  • Experience in government procurement including contracts and purchasing.
  • Demonstrated experience doing field work in remote locations and navigating resource roads.
  • Demonstrated experience in basic forestry, silviculture and silvics of commercial BC tree species.
  • Demonstrated experience using up-to-date quantitative genetic/genomic based selection procedures to permit re-selection for appropriate traits of interest or for the generation of information related to seed transfer or conservation issues.
  • Demonstrated experience using BC’s Biogeoclimatic Ecosystem Classification (BEC) system.

Additional Requirements:

  • Possess and maintain a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence (or equivalent).
  • Conduct field work which may include travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight or extended stay in rough camp conditions and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Perform the required physically demanding field work and carry equipment and supplies in difficult terrain. For example, carrying a 20 kg planting box 20 m over uneven ground.
  • Be available to work irregular hours.
  • Be potentially exposed to hazardous materials or compounds such as bleach, fertilizers, pesticides, solvents and fuels.
  • Wear appropriate safety gear as required.
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions.

There is currently one (1) permanent, full-time position available in Vernon.
This position has full time on-site requirements.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
