The Team

Economics and Trade Branch has two sections. One focuses on trade disputes and export policy, the other on economics of the forest sector and the milling sector. The Branch has roughly a dozen staff split across the two sections. This Senior Economist role will be on the economics side, supporting ministry priorities across policy, regulation, and legislation, and producing information for the public’s benefit. The Senior Economist supervises up to two economists and works closely with the group Manager and two additional economists. We frequently work with foresters, but also with accountants, scientists, and legislators. The Branch has a mix of long-term members (10+ years) and newer ones with a year or two in the Branch. The Role

The role focuses on performing socio-economic analysis related to forestry, where utilizing and updating modified Input-Output model results and thinking deeply about changes in behavior are major cornerstones of the work. Lead the design and implementation of major and complex statistical and policy analysis projects and provide authoritative advice, as a recognized economics expert, to government executive, legal defence counsel, and industry contacts on matters impacting strategic direction, major financial commitments, and significant government priorities. A Ministry expert on data from internal and external sources related to forestry harvest activity, trade, and economic impacts.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

• Master’s degree in Economics, Forest Economics, or Resource Economics. A master’s degree in a closely related field such as Statistics, Public Policy/Administration or Geography may also be considered when combined with relevant experience.
• 5 years of professional experience in data driven research and projects, preferably related to the natural resource sector (“dirt” Ministries) in one or more of the following.
  • Input-Output work, multipliers, or other tools used in socio-economic analysis.
  • Conducting socio-economic analysis to support policy development and/or working on trade related files.
  • May be considered: experience creating multiple Power BI dashboards, beyond a basic dashboard, using complex underlying data where the primary focus is allowing detailed data exploration and analysis support.

Preference may be given to applicants with:

• Experience in the last year using software such as R for statistical analysis and economic modelling, GIS software and spatial data, or creating dashboards to support a project, research, or analysis.
• Experience in the natural resource sector (“dirt” ministries), especially forestry.
• Experience in socio-economic analysis.

About this Position:
This is a temporary opportunity until July 22, 2027. This position may be extended or become permanent.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 5 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
