Job Overview
To act as a subject matter resource for the Environmental Emergency Branch and provide scientific support to legislated and other statutory decision makers during environmental emergencies. This position is responsible for implementing requirements of spillers to conduct environmental recovery operations following hazardous material spills and oversees the design, implementation and assessment of environmental monitoring programs during incident response and recovery. Other responsibilities include the development of site-specific environmental recovery strategies under the Environmental Management Act, providing EEB and multi-jurisdictional incident response teams with scientific support for spill response, maintaining knowledge of scientific research in the field, and developing response strategies with emergency responders. This position also involves field deployment for incident support and environmental monitoring and sampling activities, in cooperation with other provincial, federal and local government agencies. The position may represent the Ministry, working with all levels of government, First Nations, industry, land users, members of the public and the media, to lead education and awareness and promote the EEB’s recovery mandate.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
• Undergraduate Degree in the environmental science field (e.g. chemistry, biology, geology, environmental engineering, toxicology, environmental sciences).
• Minimum one year experience interpreting and applying environmental management legislation and policy.
• Minimum one year experience leading and/or conducting environmental sampling and monitoring.
Preference may be given to applicants with any of the following:
• A master’s degree or higher in the environmental science field (e.g. chemistry, biology, geology, environmental engineering, toxicology, environmental sciences).
• More than three years of experience developing, implementing, providing regulatory oversight and/or analyzing remediation and/or restoration plans.
• Experience providing professional scientific recommendations in environmental assessment, sampling, monitoring, restoration, or environmental response.
• Experience working under the Environmental Management Act (or comparable act in another jurisdiction).
• Experience conducting terrestrial, aquatic and/or marine environmental impact assessments.
