BC Timber Sales (BCTS) is a unique program of the Ministry of Forests (MOF). Working collaboratively with regional and district operations, BCTS plans, develops, and auctions a substantial portion of the province’s annual available timber volume. BCTS operates as a for profit entity within a government organization.  Its goal is to provide credible representative price and cost benchmark data for the Market Pricing System through auctions of timber harvested from British Columbia’s public land. BCTS operations are guided by three overarching principles, forest sector safety, reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and sustainable forest management.

The Team

The TOC Planning Team is an established team within the Okanagan Columbia Business Area, working alongside Planning Foresters, GIS staff, Indigenous Relations Liaisons, and Practices Foresters to support effective forest planning and engagement. This knowledgeable and collaborative team works in a fast-paced environment where everyone’s contributions are valued, and their work directly supports meaningful stakeholder engagement, sustainable timber planning, and the successful delivery of BCTS’s mandate.

The Role

This role offers the opportunity to work with a diverse range of stakeholders, ensuring people have meaningful opportunities to review harvest plans, share concerns, and contribute to the planning process. You’ll help develop five-year sales plans, coordinate field assessments, and work with specialists such as hydrologists, biologists, and geologists to support responsible forest management while contributing to revenue generation and fair market pricing for the Province. The Planning Forester analyzes and produces a wide range of data to develop integrated resource and operational plans, primarily the Forest Stewardship Plan (FSP) and operating plans. The position develops and implements results and strategies to meet the FSP and ensures planning components meet legislative, operating, and certification requirements. The position provides functional direction to field team professionals and technicians with expertise in timber development, harvesting, engineering and silviculture. The position builds and maintains relationships with representatives from Indigenous Peoples, resource stakeholders, Ministry and industry contacts.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

• A Registered Professional Forester (RPF) or be eligible for registration as an RPF with the Forest Professionals of British Columbia (FPBC) and two years of experience in operational field forestry activities.
• Operational field forestry activities include the following:
  • Timber harvesting monitoring/conformance
  • Cut-block development
  • Forest road engineering
  • Silviculture
  • Timber tenure development and administration
  • Planning integrated resource management
• Must possess at minimum a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s License that does not limit or restrict the ability to conduct the duties of the job

Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:

• Directly related planning and integrated resource management experience
• Experience working with Indigenous Peoples
• Coursework or experience in contract or financial administration

Provisos: 

• Must be willing and able to withstand the rigors of fieldwork.
• Must be willing to work in adverse weather conditions.
• Must be willing and able to travel to meet job requirements.
• Must be willing and able to travel in fixed and or rotary winged aircraft and or watercraft. 
• Must be able to maintain membership with the Forest Professionals of BC as a member in good standing

About this Position:
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
An eligibility list may be established for similar vacancies within the BC Timber Sales Okanagan-Columbia Business Area, Vernon.
Applicants who do not fully meet the required qualifications may be considered for this position, but at a lower classification.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
