The Team:
The West Coast Region Indigenous Relations Team is an established group of professionals dedicated to supporting meaningful consultation with First Nations on forestry decisions and applications across the region. The team includes a Director, three Senior Advisors, Indigenous Relations, and an Advisor, Indigenous Relations, who work together to navigate complex issues, build strong relationships, and support informed natural resource decision-making. Their collaborative and solutions-focused approach helps advance Ministry priorities while fostering respectful and productive partnerships. Team members are known for their passion, resilience, and commitment to achieving positive outcomes.

The Role:
The Senior Advisor, Indigenous Relations provides strategic leadership on complex consultation matters that shape natural resource decision-making in the West Coast Region. Working at the intersection of reconciliation, forestry, and public policy, this role supports meaningful consultation and engagement with Indigenous Nations and advises on issues with significant legal, economic, political, and relationship considerations. The Senior Advisor works closely with partners across government and Indigenous Nations to strengthen relationships, advance reconciliation, and support informed decision-making.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in resource management or other relevant discipline and two (2) years of related experience gained within last five (5) years; OR
  • Technical Diploma in a natural resource management related field and four (4) years of related experience gained within the last six (6) years; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and six (6) years of related experience gained within last (ten) 10 years may be considered.

Related Experience must include:

  • Experience leading or supporting consultation with First Nations on natural resource related decisions.
  • Experience conducting research and analysis related to First Nations’ rights, title and interests.
  • Experience working with First Nations’ communities.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence.

Preference may be given to those with one (1) or more of the following:

  • Persons who identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, or Inuit).
  • Experience working with natural resource authorizations (e.g. forestry, mining, land, water, wildlife).
  • Experience mentoring staff on provincial consultation policies.
  • Experience managing multiple projects and assignments.

About this Position:
There is currently one (1) temporary, full time position available up to July 31st, 2028.
This temporary position may be extended or become permanent.
This position can be located in Campbell River, Port Alberni, or Port McNeill.
Depending on the successful candidate’s location, a bi-weekly isolation allowance may apply.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies in the above locations.
A Criminal Record Check (CRC) will be required.
