The Team
At the Mental Health Review Board (MHRB), you'll join an established and passionate team, including the Board Chair, one senior manager, 12 team members, and over 65 Board members. As a Case Officer, you'll work closely with this team to ensure fair and timely hearings for patients involuntarily detained under the Mental Health Act, with a strong focus on diversity, inclusion, and fundamental justice. The MHRB is an independent tribunal established under the Mental Health Act with a mandate to conduct review panel hearings for patients in a manner that is consistent with the principles of fundamental justice and section 7 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This team has a duty to give patients fair, timely and independent reviews of their loss of liberty.
The Role
The Case Officer supports adult applicants throughout the Board’s hearing process, helping them understand the process, access available resources, and feel informed and supported from application through to post-hearing activities. Working closely with applicants, advocates, health authorities, the Independent Rights Office, and the Board, the Case Officer builds respectful and trusting relationships while recognizing diverse cultural, spiritual, emotional, language, and accessibility needs. This role promotes fair and inclusive participation by providing compassionate, trauma-informed support and ensuring applicants receive clear information and a high standard of service throughout the hearing process.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution in a related discipline such as social work, social sciences or business administration; OR
- An equivalent combination of 3 years of administrative experience, with a minimum of 1 year of current experience in an administrative body or court service may be considered.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience interpreting and explaining rules, policies, and procedures.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience managing projects and working collaboratively with partners.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience managing a diverse and fluctuating caseload and meeting established time frames/deadlines.
- A minimum of 1 year of experience providing customer service directly to members of the public who may be in crisis and representatives.
Preference may be given to applicants with:
- Identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Metis or Inuit).
- Experience understanding Indigenous history and intergenerational trauma.
- Experience managing a high volume of cases and working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Trauma-informed training.
