Description

The Team
The Recycling and Pesticide Authorizations team is a small and tight-knit team within the Authorizations and Remediation Branch.  We are responsible for the issuance of authorizations to use pesticides under the Integrated Pest Management Act and Regulation, and the review and approval of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) plans under the Recycling Regulation.  The team consists of between 5-7 dedicated environmental professionals, and we work closely with the staff in both the policy (EPIB) and Compliance (CEEB) branches of the ministry to ensure that our work is effective and focused on the broader goals of environmental protection.  Our work directly impacts users of pesticides and recycling systems in that we authorize specific programs to operate.  We pride ourselves in excellent teamwork, service to the public, awareness of the importance of diversity and inclusion, and a science-based approach to our work. 

The Role
This role offers an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on environmental and human health protection across British Columbia. The Senior Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Officer leads the review and assessment of complex pesticide use applications, provides expert regulatory and technical advice, and works with industry, First Nations, government partners, and the public to support environmental stewardship and promote the principles of Integrated Pest Management. The position also plays a role in developing policies, standards, and best practices, working on the digital transformation of data management systems, and ensuring compliance with provincial legislation. As a senior specialist, you will contribute to initiatives and help shape programs that protect human health, environmental quality, and sustainable resource management throughout the province.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • You must be registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a Registered Professional Forester with Forest Professionals BC (FPBC); OR, a Professional Agrologist with the British Columbia Institute of Agrologists (BCIA); OR, a Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscientist with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC). Note: “Immediately eligible for registration” means meeting all requirements for full professional registration and completing the process of obtaining full registration with the relevant BC professional association within six (6) months of employment.
  • Master’s degree in biology, agriculture, forestry, environmental science or applied science in an appropriate discipline, and three years of *related experience, in the field of natural resource management, one of which is related to pest management, OR;
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, agriculture, forestry, environmental science or applied science in an appropriate discipline and five years of *related experience, in the field of natural resource management, two of which are related to pest management, OR;
  • Technical diploma in biology, agriculture, forestry, environmental science or applied science in an appropriate discipline and seven years of *related experience, in the field of natural resource management, three of which are related to pest management.
  • Experience applying environmental protection legislation/regulations/policy.

*Related experience:

  • Experience in the areas of integrated pest management practices and pesticide application techniques.
  • Experience in working and negotiating with external parties, such as industry and First Nations, and in communicating technical knowledge to the public.
  • Experience in working with multiple projects or assignments.
  • Experience negotiating with staff and clients from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience in writing and interpreting technical material, and in use of software programs such as Word and Excel.
