The Team
Provincial Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (PDHHS) is a unique province-wide MCFD program supporting Deaf, D/deafblind, and hard of hearing children, youth, and families across BC. Working in an American Sign Language (ASL) and English environment, our team delivers a range of direct and contracted services, including Victory Hill Dorm, community programming, ASL instruction, and provincial outreach and system navigation. We value collaboration, inclusion, cultural and linguistic affirmation, and strong partnerships with families, communities, and service providers.
The Role
The Director, Provincial Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services provides leadership across multiple provincial service streams supporting Deaf, D/deafblind, and hard of hearing children, youth, and families. Reporting to the Executive Director of Service, you will lead the planning, implementation, and delivery of services while providing strategic direction and operational oversight. As the provincial subject-matter expert, you will advise on policies, standards, and long-range planning to ensure services reflect the unique needs of Deaf, D/deafblind, and hard of hearing young people. This role is ideal for a strategic and collaborative leader who is passionate about accessible, inclusive, and culturally affirming services and making a meaningful difference for children, youth, and families across BC.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree or higher in a human services field* AND three years of related** work experience OR
- A diploma in a human services field* AND five years of related** work experience OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
*A human services field includes social work, child and youth care, counselling, education, psychology, sociology, Indigenous studies, disability studies, deaf studies, or a related field that provides foundational knowledge relevant to working with children, youth, and families.
**Related work experience includes work with children, youth, families, or adults in child and family services, community social service agencies, assessment and counselling programs, family support services, or specialized care settings serving vulnerable populations. This experience may be gained through direct service delivery roles or through supervisory and management positions.
Other Requirements:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) to support direct communication, consultation, supervision, and collaboration within an ASL–spoken language work environment.
- Minimum two (2) years of progressive experience in service planning, program development, implementation, and evaluation.
- Experience supervising multi-disciplinary staff, including work assignment, performance management, recruitment, onboarding, training, and employee engagement.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License with no restriction or equivalent (i.e. from another Canadian Province).
Preference may be given to applicants with:
- Experience working with Deaf, D/deafblind, and hard of hearing children, youth, and their families.
- Lived experience as a Deaf or hard of hearing person.
- Post-secondary education in a human services field.
